Survive Juniata
Fort Wayne, IN- The top-ranked team in Division III gave IPFW
a run for their money on Saturday night, in men’s volleyball
at the Gates Center. After rolling out to a 2-0 lead, the Mastodons
held off Juniata College (PA), 3-2.
IPFW won their season opener by the scores of 30-28, 30-28,
32-34, 33-35, 15-12.
After falling behind, the Eagles picked up their hitting in
games three (.414) and four (.324) to tie it at two, but it was
Juniata’s unforced errors, especially serving, that did them
in. The Eagles committed 32 service errors in the match.
2004 NCAA All-American outside hitter Matt
Zbyszewski (Toronto,
Ontario, Canada) led the Mastodons with 27 kills and 14 digs,
on .370 hitting.
Mike
Randolph (Jr/S/Columbus, OH) also registered a double-double
with 57 assists and 12 digs.
Junior middle hitter Serdar
Sikca (Istanbul, Turkey) and freshman
middle Josh Stewart (St. Mary’s/Ontario/Canada) had 19 and 11
kills respectively. For Sikca, it was a career kill night.
Juniata (0-2) featured five players in double-figure kills,
with Glenn DeHaven leading the pack with twenty.
The Mastodons return to action next weekend with home matches
against George Mason (1/21) and Penn State (1/22). Both matches
are at the Gates Center at 7pm.
