Rebound with Sweep of 'Hurst
Fort
Wayne, IN -
A tough five game loss to Loyola-Chicago last night was softened
a little with a three game sweep of Mercyhurst College, on
Saturday night at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.
IPFW cruised
to the win by the scores of 30-21, 30-22, and 30-19.
Leading
the Mastodons, who came into the match with an identical 3-2
conference record as the Lakers, was junior middle hitter Serdar
Sikca
with ten kills, two solo blocks, and seven block assists, for
15.5 points.
Senior outside
hitter Matt Zbyszewski registered 11 kills and two block assists
for 12 points.
The defense
was huge for the Mastodons with 14 total team blocks and 21
digs.
Junior Mike
Daiga, playing his first match at setter, recorded 29 assists.
Mercyhurst
(4-3, 3-3 MIVA) was led by outside hitter Dave Schmidl with
14 kills and three service aces.
IPFW improves
to 5-4, 4-2 in conference, and will compete in the Rutgers-Newark
Golden Dome Classic next weekend. Their first match will be
a re-match with Penn State on February 18th. The Nittany Lions
beat IPFW at Gates, 3-1, back on January 22nd.
The Mastodons
will also face host Rutgers-Newark on the 19th. Rutgers-Newark's
assistant coach, Mindy Mills, is the former assistant sports
information director at IPFW.
