Dons Make a Clean Sweep at Hofstra

Hempstead, NY - The IPFW Women's Volleyball team traveled to assistant coaches Steve and Julie Florios' old stomping grounds of Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York for the Hofstra/Asics Invitational. The Dons swept the competition at the invite, going 3-0.

IPFW vs. Miami (OH)
The Mastodons defeated the Miami (OH) RedHawks in three games Friday night (32-30, 30-20, 30-27).

Senior Fabiana Souza double-doubled against the RedHawks with 22 kills and 13 digs. Souza hit a .462 and put up 24.0 points for the Dons. Senior Erika Leitzke posted 36 assists and 5 digs in the three game match. The junior class supported their seniors well. Nicole Howell posted 8 digs and four kills while Claire Jackson and Amanda Pfister each recorded 9 kills.

Overall the Dons hit a .244 for the match and had seven team blocks. For Miami, Emily Schroeder had 13 kills and Carli Reihman put up 12 kills.

IPFW vs. Temple
The Mastodons woke up Saturday morning to some stiff competition in the Temple Owls. The Dons prevailed in five games (30-21, 27-30, 29-31, 30-21, 15-8). They took the first one and then dropped the next two to Temple before rallying back to take the last two games.

Souza once again led the Dons but she wasn't the only Don who performed well. Four Mastodons recorded double-doubles, Souza (24 kills/13 digs), Howell (16 kills/15 digs), Leitzke (71 assists/15 digs), and sophomore Cynara Martins with 20 kills and 21 digs.

The Dons hit a .320 for the five game match. IPFW also posted 12.5 team blocks in the early showing at the Hofstra/Asics Invitational.

IPFW vs. Hofstra
In the final match of the tournament, the Dons dominated the Pride of Hofstra, defeating them in three games (30-26, 30-24, 30-27).

Martins led IPFW with 20 kills and also recorded a double-double with 12 digs. Howell also recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. Leitzke posted 41 assits in the final match of the invite.

For Hofstra, Talita Silva put up 16 kills and nine digs. Both teams posted 5 team blocks.

All-Tournament Team
The Mastodons placed three on the All-Tournament team. Souza was named MVP while Leitzke and Martins were also named to the team.
