IPFW Finishes Third at Independent Tournament

Greeley, CO - The IPFW Women's Volleyball team went into Saturday undefeated in the tournament, but South Dakota State proved to be the competition that would ruin their streak. IPFW lost to SDSU in five games to go to the consolation bracket. The Mastodons finished the tournament in third place while Utah Valley State took the Independent title.

IPFW v. South Dakota State

It was a back and forth game for the Mastodons in the afternoon match against South Dakota State. After the Dons took game one, the Jackrabbits bounced back to take game two. It took a game five, but IPFW couldn't hold out, falling 3-2 with final scores of 30-27, 27-30, 32-30, 26-30, 11-15.

Fabiana Souza had a career game with 34 kills (just two shy of the single match record at IPFW) with 81 attempts for a hitting percentage of .309. She finished off her double-double with 17 digs and also put up two service aces, a block solo and three block assists.

Claire Jackson and Amanda Pfister each put up 12 kills while Nicole Howell was close behind with 11. Howell finished up her double-double with 12 digs.

Erika Leitzke put up 61 assists and 19 digs for the afternoon. Peachy Jankowski dug up 22 balls in the game.

For SDSU, Minette Ridenour had 26 kills with Kristina Martin close behind with 23. Kristie Klusaw had 76 assists and Samantha Pearson dug up 29 balls for the Jackrabbits.

IPFW v. Northern Colorado

The Mastodons faced Northern Colorado for a second time at the tournament and the result was the same, a win for the Dons in three, 30-20, 30-17, 30-23.

Souza led with 12 kills for the match. She finishes her career with 2,305 kills in four years. This season she knocked down 524 kills. Souza also dug up 9 balls and had two block assists.

Jackson, Pfister, and Jessica Miller each put up 10 kills for the Dons in their final match. Jackson hit a .571, and also had three block assists.

Leitzke added 28 assists and seven digs to the match for the Dons and finishes her only season at IPFW with 1,171 assists. She added two service aces as well.

Jessica Dominiak spent time in the setter position and made good use of it. She knocked down 5 kills in 6 attempts (.833 hitting percentage) along with 13 assists and two block assists.

For Northern Colorado, Lenay Goble had nine kills while Corrinne Chapin had 29 assists.

The Mastodons finished the tournament in third place and Souza was named to the All-Tournament team. They wrapped up their season going 24-6, the fewest losses since going Division I and best winning percentage (.800) as well.
