Blue Demons No Match for Mastodons

Fort Wayne, IN - In their home opener the IPFW Women's Volleyball team had no trouble with the DePaul Blue Demons taking them out in three games.

The Mastodons came out swinging in game one, defeating the Blue Demons 30-17. The Dons hit a whopping .500 in that game. The Mastodons took off early, taking an 8-2 lead early and never looking back. In game two it was much of the same, the Blue Demons did start to fight back, but couldn't finish. The Dons took game two 30-17.

Game three proved to be the real competition of the afternoon. DePaul took their first lead of the match and held it close all the way to the end. The Mastodons prevailed and just edged out DePaul, 30-28.

Senior Fabiana Souza led the Dons with 19 kills and hit a .514 for the match. She also chipped in a service ace, seven digs and a block solo to finish with 21 points.

Senior Erika Leitzke made her first start in the Mastodon uniform and put up 36 assists, nine digs and two block assists in the Dons first win.

Junior Nicole Howell punched out nine kills while fellow junior Amanda Pfister put down eight. Freshman Jessica Miller recorded the highest hitting percentage on the team with a .545 in her first collegiate game.

Overall the Mastodons hit a .367 and recorded 7 team blocks.

For DePaul, Aly Zavitz knocked down 10 kills and was followed closely by Ellen Hayes with nine. Setter Mandi Caputo recorded 28 assists for the afternoon. Overall the Blue Demons hit a .084 for the match.

IPFW will now travel to the Hofstra/Asics Invitational on September 2-3 in Hempstead, New York. Their next home match is September 6 at 7:00 pm versus the Cougars of Chicago State.
