IPFW
Falls in Five
Evanston,
IL-Big hitting, good digging, and plenty of blocks
highlighted a thrilling five game match between IPFW and Northwestern
on Saturday night, on day one of the NU Labor Day Invite.
But in the end it was the Wildcats holding off the 'Dons 15-13
in the fifth game.
Northwestern
(1-0) survived by the scores of 26-30, 30-27, 29-31, 30-22,
and 15-13.
The match
saw both teams hit well (.298-NU/.247-IPFW), play great defense
(65 digs-NU/62 digs-IPFW), and block (10.5-NU/10-IPFW).
The Mastodons
were led again by junior middle hitter Fabiana Souza
(Belo Horizonte, Brazil) with 22 kills. Freshman Cynara
Martins (OH/Belo Horizonte, Brazil) registered a
double-double with 19 kills, and a team-high 17 digs.
Sophomore
Nicole Howell (OH/Fort Wayne, IN) was one
dig shy of a double-double (17 kills/9 digs). Freshman Libero
Peachy Jankowski (Fraser, MI) dug up 14 balls,
and junior setter Ashlee Roth (Leo, IN) recorded
59 assists.
Northwestern
was led by Julie Purcell with a match-high 23 kills.
IPFW (1-1)
will play two matches on Sunday to wrap up the tournament.
The 'Dons face #4 Florida at noon, and Bowling Green at 5pm.
