Mastodons
Collar the Great Danes
Fort
Wayne, IN-The IPFW women’s volleyball team took advantage
of 23 service errors to defeat the University at Albany 3-1,
on Wednesday night at the Gates Center, to open up
the 2004
season.
“Bring
your dog to the game” night started off slowly for the
Mastodons. The Great Danes (0-1), who posted 24 wins
in 2003, slugged .244 in the opening set to win 30-26.
IPFW roared back to take the next three game 30-27, 30-26,
and 31-29.
Down
one game, and trailing 9-2, head coach Kelley
Hartley Hutton (who needs just one more win
to reach 100 at IPFW) inserted junior setter Ashlee
Roth (Leo, IN) into the lineup.
The move immediately paid off with Roth getting a solo block,
and the ‘Dons were on the comeback trail.
Roth had a career match, with 31 assists and 11 digs for
a double-double. She also had three solo blocks and a service
ace.
Junior middle hitter Fabiana
Souza (Belo Horizonte, Brazil)
picked right up where she left off last season, putting down
23 kills (match high) and digging up 16 balls.
Newcomers also highlighted the stat sheet for the Mastodons
(1-0). Cynara Martins (OH/Fr/Belo Horizonte, Brazil) dug
a team-high 17 balls. She also added seven kills. Freshman
libero Peachy Jankowski (Fraser, MI) had a nice beginning
to her collegiate career with 15 digs and two service aces.
The Great Danes were led by Shelby Goldman with 13 kills.
Outside hitter Ashley DeNeal was match-high with 23 digs.
Because
of the threatening weather in Florida, the Central Florida
Tournament has been canceled. IPFW was to have played
matches against Cleveland State, LSU, and Central Florida
this weekend. Log on to www.ipfw.edu/athletics for possible
newly scheduled matches this weekend.
