Volleyball goes 1-1 on Final Day of Invitational
Fort Wayne, IN- IPFW
split their final two matches on the last day of the 2003 IPFW
Invitational. The Mastodons beat Middle Tennessee State 3-2
but fell to #23 Washington 3-0.
The afternoon match against Middle Tennessee saw the ‘Dons
jump out to an early 2-0 lead by the scores of 30-26 and 30-23.
The Blue Raiders found their hitting touch in games three
and four and took those 30-22 and 30-20.
It seemed as though MTSU had the momentum, but IPFW jumped
out to an 8-1 lead in the final game and cruised to a 15-6
win.
In the match, Fabiana
Souza (So/Belo Horizonte, Brazil) led
the ‘Dons with 23 kills and 20 digs.
Nicole
Howell (Fr/Fort Wayne, IN/Bishop Luers) continued her
outstanding play, knocking down 11 kills and registering nine
digs.
Senior Kirsta
Solberg (Huron, OH/Huron) joined Souza on the
double-double list with 11 kills and 19 digs.
In the nightcap, IPFW played the 23rd ranked Huskies of Washington
close, but came out on the short end of a 30-16, 30-28, 30-27
score.
Souza again pounded out 23 kills to go along with 16 digs.
Junior Lindi Bankowski (Temperance, MI/Bedford) dug out 12
balls on the defensive side for the Mastodons.
Washington went 3-0 in the tournament to win the championship.
Sanja Tomasevic, who had 23 kills and 10 digs against IPFW
was name the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
