Mastodons
Hold Off Bulldogs
Fort Wayne, IN- The
IPFW Women’s Volleyball home opener, against Butler
University, looked like a walk in the park
for two games, but turned into a dog fight. In the end,
the Mastodons had just enough to get past BU 3-2.
IPFW took the first two games of the match, rather easily,
by the identical scores of 30-25. But something happened on
the way to a sweep. That something was Butler’s Candice Washington.
Washington was all over the place in games three and four,
helping Butler to a pair of 30-16 wins.
The
fifth game was back and forth, like the entire match. The
Mastodons jumped out to a four point lead, but the Bulldogs
(3-1) stormed back looking to close it out at 14-12.
With two match points against them, the ‘Dons used some timely
serving from Janelle Pollard (Jr/OH/Fort Wayne, IN) and a huge
kill from Kirsta Solberg (Sr/OH/Huron, OH) to seal a 16-14
fifth game win.
Solberg and Pollard each slammed down 16 kills, while Solberg
doubled-up with 16 digs. Fabiana Souza (So/MB/Brazil) also
registered a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs.
With the win, IPFW begins the season at 3-1 and will next
see action hosting the IPFW Invitation September 5th and 6th
at the Gates Center.
