Hold Off Toledo For 10th Straight
Fort
Wayne, IN- They didn’t have their “A” game tonight,
but when it came down to crunch time, the IPFW women’s volleyball
team got it done. They defeated the very game Toledo Rockets
Tuesday night at Gates 3-2.
Toledo came out of the shoot on fire, Blasting their way
to a 30-23 first game win behind a .412 hitting percentage.
IPFW would find their legs and take game two 30-24.
Toledo took a 2-1 lead with a game three 30-20 win before
IPFW tied it at 4-all 30-27. That set up the exciting fifth
game, and the “Mann Show”, Kristin Mann that is.
The freshman outside hitter from Richmond, Indiana drilled
three kills and blocked two shots to give IPFW a 9-2 lead,
a lead they would stretch into a 15-7 fifth game win.
For the match, IPFW was led by sophomore middle hitter Fabiana
Souza (Belo Horizante, Brazil) who doubled up yet again with
25 kills and 13 digs. Souza was one block shy of a triple-double.
On the defensive side, seniors Nicole
Ray (L/Fort Wayne)
and Sarah Leffers (DS/Fort Wayne, IN) chipped in with 20
and 13 digs respectively.
Junior middle Lindsay
Brammer (Yorktown, IN) came off the
bench and sparked the offense with six kills and a .400 hitting
mark.
For Toledo, Kate Bean, Carrie McCaw, Chelsey Poquette, and
Rachel Mohler all had double-doubles.
With
the win (IPFW’s 10th in a row) the ‘Dons are 19-9.
They
host the Division I Independent Tournament
this Friday
and Saturday at the Gates Center.
The tournament
(which the ‘Dons won last year) features IPFW, Texas-Pan
American,
Northern
Colorado, Utah Valley State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
Matches begin at 10:30am each day.
