Women's
Volleyball Just Short in Championship
Mount Pleasant, MI- Two
points separated the IPFW women’s volleyball team from
the Championship
of the Central Michigan “Super 8 Classic”. The Mastodons fell
in five games, in the final match, to eventual champion Wisconsin-Green
Bay, Saturday night in Michigan.
UWGB kept their record perfect on the season (3-0) with a
30-21, 27-30, 30-22, 30-28, 16-14 win.
IPFW (2-1) got another big game from Fabiana
Souza (So/MB/Belo
Horizonte, Brazil) with 28 kills.
Freshman Nicole
Howell (OH/Fort Wayne/Bishop Luers) chipped
in 12 kills and 9 digs.
Senior Sarah
Leffers (L/Fort Wayne/South Side) had a tremendous
game with 25 digs.
IPFW reached the finals of the Super 8 Classic by beating
Central Michigan.
IPFW dropped the first two games, in their first match, to
Central Michigan 30-24 and 31-29, but then the Mastodons caught
fire. In games three and four, IPFW would win 30-24 and 30-27,
setting up the fifth and deciding game which they won 15-12.
IPFW got some outstanding performances in game one. Souza
doubled up again, with 18 kills and 14 digs. Kirsta
Solberg (Sr/MH/Huron, OH) also went double-double with 15 kills and
digs. Junior outside hitter Janelle Pollard (Fort Wayne, IN/South
Side HS) registered 13 kills, three service aces, and four
digs to go along with a .323 hitting percentage.
Solberg and Souza were named to the All-Tournament team.
