Mastodons Defeat
Pumas in Exhibition
Fort
Wayne , IN - The IPFW Women's Basketball team gave the
crowd a great taste of what IPFW basketball is going to be like
this year, better and stronger. The Mastodons only gave up the
lead a few times in the first seven minutes before taking over
and dominating
the
Pumas of St. Joseph's College, 71-55 in their first exhibition
game.
IPFW and
St. Joseph's went back and forth during the first seven minutes
before IPFW started to build a strong lead. At half the Dons
were up 33-22 and they kept that momentum going in the second
finishing with a 16 point lead.
Kelly
Boyd stepped
up offensively, scoring a game high for the Mastodons of
12 points in 21 minutes. Boyd was 6 of 7 from the field.
Ashley
Johnson was
another Mastodon in double digits. She scored 11 points and
also tacked on five assists, two steals and five boards in
the exhibition game.
Juliane
Höhne saw
22 minutes in her first collegiate game and made good use of it. Höhne put
up 10 points and four boards along with three blocks and a steal.
Natalie
Roberts also
stepped up from last year and took down three offensive and
eight defensive boards for the Mastodons.
Overall
the Mastodons were 45.9% (28-61) from the field and 35.7% (5-14)
from beyond the arc. At the charity stripe IPFW hit 50% of
their shots. The Mastodons surpassed the Pumas in all categories
taking down 50 total rebounds, 18 assists, 11 steals and six
blocks in their exhibition game.
For
the Pumas, Allison Hughes scored a game high 14 points and
was followed by Patience Meyer and Rachel Theodore with 11
points each. Defensively, Michelle Bova brought down 10 boards
and Hughes had three steals.
The
Mastodons will face Marian College in another exhibition game
next Saturday (Nov. 12) at 1:00 pm in the Gates Center before
starting their regular season. IPFW will travel to Bowling
Green State on Nov. 16 for their season opener. Their home
opener is Dec. 2 versus Kalamazoo College starting at 7 pm
in the Gates Center.
