'Dons Demolish Islanders in Overtime
Fort Wayne , IN - The IPFW Women's Basketball team ended their season with a lot of emotion and hard play as they defeated the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders in overtime, 71-67 at the Gates Sports Center.
IPFW finishes their season 7-21, having won 5 of their last six games of the season and currently holding a three game win streak.
IPFW ran out to a 6-0 start in the first before the Islanders began to make their move. They went on a 9-3 run to tie the game up at the 11:04 mark. The Islanders kept going from there, taking it to a 14 point lead at 2:29 before the 'Dons went on a 7-0 run to finish the first down by seven, 32-25.
After intermission, the Islanders picked up right where they left off. During the second, the largest lead Corpus Christi held was at the 16:325 mark, up by eleven. Heavy fouling early in the second put some 'Dons into trouble, but others stepped up and filled in to take the Islanders lead down to two at the 8:12 mark.
With just 2:23 left in the second, the Mastodons took their first lead of the second, with only one point. Johnna Lewis-Carlisle started to 'Dons off right at that point, sinking a three pointer to give them a four point lead. From that point, they took off, and held a four point lead with just 10 seconds left before two free throws and a made bucket put them into overtime.
IPFW didn't lose any momentum in overtime, taking off to a six point lead with just 3:03 left. Even with the Islanders hitting threes, free throws were the Mastodons ally, as the sunk eight to keep their lead over the Islanders, and taking the win, 71-67.
Four 'Dons finished in double figures. Ashley Johnson scored 19 points and played every minute of the game. She was 13 of 14 from the line. Johnson pulled down five boards along with four assists and two steals.
Lewis-Carlisle posted 17 points, going 5 of 13 from beyond the arc and 2 of 4 from the line. Although she got into foul trouble, Lewis-Carlisle also pulled down six boards, two assists and two steals in her 34 minutes.
The freshmen class stepped up tonight at the Gates Center. Even though she fouled out in the second, Juliane Höhne posted 10 points and five boards in just 14 minutes. Tina Moen recorded 11 points as well as two blocks for the 'Dons.
Nanyamka Moore and Lewis-Carlisle each pulled down six boards for the 'Dons.
In their final game of their career, Jenny Green dished out three assists and two rebounds while Kelly Boyd recorded her 83rd block, securing her #2 spot on the Mastodons all-time blocking list. Geneva Murdock, although hindered by injury, started her final game and posted a rebound in her two minutes on the floor.
