IPFW Loses Heartbreaker to Longwood

Fort Wayne, IN - Longwood University got 34 points from senior forward Ashley Mason, and held off a furious IPFW rally, to top the Mastodons 82-77 Saturday afternoon at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.

IPFW held an early lead in the game, but the Lancers kept pounding it inside to Mason who finished the first half with 20, giving Longwood a 44-33 lead at the break.

In the second half, Longwood opened up their biggest lead (61-46) on a lay-in by freshman center Anna Steg.

But the 'Dons would not go quietly. IPFW got a spark from senior forward Jenny Green who started a 13-2 run with an old fashioned three-point play.

Factor in six free-throws from freshman guard Pavla Pletkova and a pair of buckets from junior guard Ashley Johnson, and the Mastodons trailed by only three (68-65) with just over five minutes remaining.

But Longwood would go back to their proven formula. Mason hit a couple more buckets insid, and the Lancers hit their foul shots the rest of the way for their seventh win of the season.

Sophomore guard Johnna Lewis-Carlisle led IPFW in scoring with 19 points.

Johnson added 16 points and six rebounds and Green chipped in nine.

Mason, again, led all scorers with 34. Courtney Dyer added 11.

IPFW (2-17) will begin a three game road trip starting at Texas Pan American on February 4. They will then travel to Texas A&M Corpus Christi (2/6) and Purdue (2/9) before finishing out their season at home with a six game home stand.
