Free Throws Key in Mastodon Loss
Fort Wayne, IN - Butler had almost twice as many chances at the charity stripe as the 'Dons and made good use of them Wednesday night at the Gates Center, defeating IPFW, 70-60.
IPFW only had 19 chances at the stripe and made good use of them, connecting on 14. Butler was 26 of 36 on their freebies.
The first half went back and forth as the 'Dons kept the Bulldogs to only a five point lead until the nine minute mark when they tied it up at 13. Butler began to open up again, taking an 11 point lead at half, 36-25.
In the second Butler picked up where they left off, taking their largest lead of 13 at 9:15. IPFW began to fight back at that point, going on a 6-0 run before foul shots put the Bulldogs back up by nine. With a minute left the Mastodons began fouling and kept scoring as well but it wasn't enough. Butler held on 70-60.
Three Mastodons finished in double figures. Johnna Lewis-Carlisle hit for 17, going 7 of 20 from the field and perfect at the charity stripe, 2-2.
Tina Moen had a career night, scoring 16 points and leading the 'Dons in boards with eight.
Ashley Johnson rounded out the top three with 15 points. Johnson was 9 of 12 from the charity stripe with three assists.
The Bulldogs had five in double digits. Ellen Hamilton led with 19 points, she was followed closely by Jackie Closser with 17. Cassie Freeman and Lade Akade each put up 11 while Stephanie Boeke pulled down 11 boards.
Overall shooting was very even, Butler hit 38% and IPFW with 37.9%. IPFW out-blocked the Bulldogs, 6-3 and just edged them at the line, 73.7% to 72.2%.
IPFW will host the Longwood University Lancers on Saturday afternoon at 1 pm at the Gates Center. They will then begin a three game road trip to Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Texas Pan American and Purdue.
