Islanders Hold Off Mastodon Advance
Corpus Christi , TX - IPFW rounded out their Texas trip with a stop at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The Mastodons started off on the right foot, fighting hard, but couldn't catch up to the Islanders, falling 64-56.
In the first it was a back and forth game with the Islanders pulling ahead at 9:25 with a nine point lead. IPFW began to pull back TAMUCC's lead after a trey from Johnna Lewis-Carlisle at 8:28. The Islanders held onto their lead, going into intermission, 31-24.
After intermission, the Islanders came out shooting and took their lead to 12. After holding onto a 10 point lead for most of the first eight minutes, IPFW began to chip away at Corpus Christi's lead. In the next four minutes the Mastodons went on a 7-2 run to take the Islanders down to a five point lead.
Texas A&M Corpus Christi would hold out and take the win with an eight point difference, 64-56.
Ashley Johnson led the 'Dons offense, connecting for 20 points and the defense with seven boards.
Hilary O'Connell surged with 13 points and five boards after going 3-8 from beyond the arc.
For the Islanders, Elisa Beagle put up a double-double with 12 points and 14 boards while Terra Andrews had 20 points and Nicole Duncan had 10.
Both teams had a lot of opportunities but they just didn't fall. The Mastodons were 21-56 from the floor (37.5%) while the Islanders were 24-66 (36.4%). IPFW was much more confident in their three point shooting, knocking down 42.9% of their shots compared to the Islanders 22.2%.
IPFW will now travel to Purdue on Thursday for a 7 pm game time. The Mastodons will finish out their season at home
with a six game home stand starting the 18th with a rematch with Texas Pan American.
