Dons Play Hard But Fall Short

Fort Wayne, IN - The IPFW Mastodons fought a tough first half but couldn't keep the momentum going in the second. They fell to Winthrop, 60-44.

The Mastodons were down by five at intermission, 28-23. Shooting wasn't the best for either side, it was four minutes into the game before anyone scored. Winthrop took up an 11 point lead before the Dons had put anything on the board. They fought back though and took the lead for a brief time before the Eagles got ahead again.

In the second, the game stayed tight, Winthrop had at the most a five point lead until the 12 minute mark. Then the Eagles opened up with a 19-0 run to hold the Dons off for the final of 60-44.

Ashley Johnson was the only Don in double digits. She put up 12 points along with five boards. She went 5-8 from the charity stripe and also posted a block and two steals.

Defensively, Juliane Höhne put up seven boards and a steal in her 22 minutes. Johnna Lewis-Carlisle led the team in steals and assists with three each.

For the Eagles, three were in double digits, Tiffany Rodd (19 points), Ashley Fann (13 points) and Ashley Haugtvedt (10 points). Defensively Lisa Koop put up nine boards.

The Mastodons will now have a few days off before heading to Iowa State for the Cyclone Classic on December 29 and 30. The Mastodons will first face Appalachian State on Thursday and on Friday either Iowa State or Nicholls State. Their next home game is January 7 versus Radford at the Gates Center. Start time is 7 pm.
