Retrievers Make a Run For It

Fort Wayne, IN - The Mastodons kept the Retrievers running for the first 18 minutes before UMBC took off and had an 11 point lead at half. The Retrievers kept that momentum going in the second and defeated the Dons, 75-53.

The Mastodons kept the game moving and even throughout the first 18 minutes, tying up over four times and taking the lead multiple times as well. The Dons were up by as much as 5 before the Retrievers got back into it and took a substantial lead in the last two minutes prior to intermission.

The Retrievers kept that going in the second, holding a 24 point lead just seven minutes into the half. With just under seven minutes left UMBC had a 30 point lead before the Dons started to eat back into it, but there wasn't enough time.

Hilary O'Connell recorded a team season high with 22 points. She was perfect from beyond the arc, going 6-6. She hit 2-3 at the charity stripe and also pulled down four boards.

Defensively Ashley Johnson was all over, pulling down 10 boards. She also had five assists and a block for the contest.

For the Retrievers, four had double digit points, Kristin Drabyn (14), Matea Pender (13), Brittnie Hughes (11) and Sharrie Rohde (10).

Overall the Mastodons were 40.4% from the field and 81.8% from the free throw line.

The ladies will face Winthrop on Friday (Dec. 23) starting at 1 pm at the Gates Center. They are then on the road for a three game stand before they face Radford on Jan. 7 at the Gates Center.
