IPFW Takes Home Opener with Ease

Fort Wayne, IN - The IPFW Women's Basketball team took on the Hornets of Kalamazoo College in their home opener at the Gates Center Friday night. The Mastodons made an easy night of it, defeating the Hornets, 98-44.

Although the Hornets were on the board first, the Mastodons fought back and took the lead and began to make their move. Eight minutes in and they were up by ten, at the half the Dons were up 54-19 with a 35 point lead.

The Mastodons started the second half right were they had left off in the first, finishing off the Hornets by 54.

Overall the Dons were 56.6% from the field and 42.1% from beyond the arc. In the first half IPFW was perfect at the charity stripe, but they finished the game with a 66.7% efficiency. Five Mastodons finished in double figure points for the evening.

Juliane Höhne led the Mastodons with 20 points. She was 10 of 15 from the field. Höhne also put up four blocks and three steals in 24 minutes.

Johnna Lewis-Carlisle wasn't far behind, knocking down 15 points and four assists. Lewis-Carlisle was 6 of 12 from the field and three of six from beyond the arc with four steals.

Nanyamka Moore posted 13 points, along with six assists and a steal. Hilary O'Connell put up 11 points and Tina Moen rounded out the double figures with 10 points to go along with her six steals on the night.

Natalie Roberts put up the defense for the Dons with seven boards. She also had two blocks and a steal.

For Kalamazoo, Stefanie Salasky put up 12 points. She was the only Hornet in double figures. Mary Brown had six boards for the night.

The Mastodons pulled down 31 rebounds and had 28 assists. They set a school record in blocked shots with 11. The previous school record was set against Tri-State during the 1990-91 season. The Mastodons only committed seven turnovers compared to the Hornets thirty-five.

The Mastodons will travel to Tennessee Martin on Sunday for an afternoon match-up. Game time is 3:00 pm. IPFW's next home game is Thursday, December 8 versus the Jaguars of IUPUI.

December 11th marks the first Hoopla double-header featuring Purdue, Valparaiso, Northern Iowa and the Mastodons. IPFW will take on Northern Iowa starting at 1:00 pm at the Coliseum and the Purdue/Valpo match-up will follow.
