IPFW Holds off Utah State

Fort Wayne, IN- A twenty-point first half lead evaporated in front of their eyes, but the IPFW women’s basketball team found a way to get it done on Sunday, with an 83-74 win over Utah State University at the Gates Center.

The Mastodons had things going their own way in the first half. Amy Gearlds (Sr/F/Beech Grove, IN) filled it up for 15 points, with three triples, en route to a 46-27 half-time lead.

But, Utah State, who just started playing women’s basketball again this season, did not go quietly. Virginia Jennings scored three consecutive baskets to draw the Aggies to within ten. And, with 4:40 left in the game, a three-pointer by Ashley Anderson tied the ball game, for the first and only time, at 61-61.

Mastodons’ guard Maggie Bruening (Sr/Fort Wayne, IN) stepped up and scored five of the ‘Dons next seven points. Center Verea Bibbs’(Jr/Euclid, OH) bucket and foul underneath ballooned the IPFW lead back to double digits, and IPFW held on for their second win of the season.

Gearlds was game-high with 24 points. Courtney Nicley (Jr/G/Lebanon, IN) added fourteen, and Bibbs chipped in 11 points and 10 rebounds for her double-double.

Four Aggies (0-7) scored in double figures, with Anderson leading the way with sixteen.

The Mastodons return to action on Tuesday night (12/23) hosting Indiana State at 7pm at the Gates Center.
