IPFW Soccer Begins Season on The Road

Fort Wayne, IN- On the heels of a wildly successful 2003 IPFW Soccer Showcase, the Mastodons’ Men’s and Women’s soccer teams begin the 2003 regular season campaign away from the Hefner Soccer Fields this weekend.

The men will participate in the IUPUI Classic in Indianapolis. On Saturday, IPFW will face Centenary College of Louisiana, and host IUPUI on Sunday. Both matches begin at 2:30pm.

IUPUI, out of the Mid-Continent Conference, was picked to finish 7th overall in pre-season voting done by the conference coaches.

IPFW comes into the classic off of a very close 2-1 loss to Dayton in the showcase.

The IPFW women’s soccer team will travel to Akron, Ohio, to participate in the University of Akron Tournament.

The Mastodons will take on host Akron in the first match on Saturday night at 7:30pm. The Lady Zips were 5-10-1 overall in 2003 and 1-10-1 in Mid-American Conference play.

IPFW’s possible opponents on the second day of the tournament will either be Duquesne University, out of Pittsburgh, PA, or Howard University from Washington, D.C. Those matches are slated for Sunday.

Duquesne, an Atlantic-10 team, is led by first year head coach James Walker. Their 2002 record was 5-13-1, 1-9-1 (A-10).

Howard University features 2002 Independent Soccer Player of the Year, Raneika Bean. Bean scored 21 goals and recorded 2 assists for a total of 44 points in leading the Bison to a 6-9-1 mark in ’02.

Head Coach Terry Stefankiewicz’s Mastodons enter the Akron tournament fresh off of a 2-0 win over Central Michigan in the Soccer Showcase. Alyssa Bailey (Fr./F/Argos, IN) and Kristin Limburg (So./F/Fort Wayne, IN) got the goals for IPFW in that match.
