MASTODONS DOWN WESTERN ILLINOIS 3-1
(10/25/02) Macomb, Ill.
- Three first half goals by the IPFW Mastodons were enough to fend off Western
Illinois' women's soccer team, 3-1.
IPFW (2-10-2) received
first half goals from Lindsay Williamson (6:56), Shacina Hersey (21:23) and
Kristin Macdonald (32:42) to give the Mastodons a 3-0 lead at the half. IPFW
out-shot Western Illinois 10-6 in the first half, but only produced two shots

MASTODONS FALL 5-1
AT DETROIT MERCY
(10/23/02) Detroit, Mich.
- The IPFW women's soccer team started up a tough road trip this week with
a Wednesday afternoon 5-1 loss to Detroit Mercy. With the victory, the Titans
improve to 5-7-4 on the year, while IPFW fell to 1-10-1 on the season.
The game was scoreless
at the half with IPFW leading the shot count five to four and they also held
a two to one corner kick advantage. Detroit had trouble mainly because of
the Mastodons off-sides trap limiting the Titan offense's time of possession
in their end.
Detroit's Judith Atwood
got things started in the second half for Titans on an easy goal. Tanya Tiselj
set up the goal on a pass that threaded the Mastodons' defense and that allowed
Atwood to tap it in easily and it appeared that there were no more troubles
with the "trap."
Just four minutes later
it was Tiselj again setting up a goal, this time to Allison Epple in the 52nd
minute to put the Titans up 2-0. Detroit's offense was far from finished at
that point, as Tegan Phillips got in the scoring mix on a perfect header set
up by Carrie Johnston's cross.
Not even five minutes
later, Detroit's Jessica Barrett made her contribution to the scoring entourage
with a goal from Phillips in the 67th minute. In the 69th minute Phillips
scored her second goal of the game and final goal of the afternoon.
The Titans goalkeeper
Alisson Dube and her defense almost registered their fifth shutout of the
year but it was spoiled when IPFW's Lindsay Williamson scored in the 81st
minute on a penalty kick.
Overall on the game,
Detroit came back in the shots and corner kicks categories by taking a 12-10
advantage in shots and a 4-2 lead on corner kicks.
Next up for the Mastodons is a road contest against Western Illinois on Friday and then to Northern Iowa on Sunday.

visiting Murray State Saturday afternoon as they dropped their fifth consecutive
game. The Mastodon fell to 1-6-1, while Racers improved to 4-4 on the season.
After 10 minutes of scoreless
action in the first half, Jessica Fioranelli took a rebound off the cross
bar and rocketed it past IPFW's goalie Rachel Poor to give the Racers the
1-0 lead. With less then 15 minutes left in the first half, the Racers would
add their second goal of the game as IPFW fouled Abbie Perez in the box. Perez
then blasted the direct kick form 15 yards out over the IPFW wall and past
Poor to give the Racers a 2-0 lead at the half.

again when an IPFW defender took Jessica Fioranellli down from behind in the
box. Fioranelli scored the third and final goal for the Racers on a penalty
kick at the 83rd minute. IPFW would not be able to get another shot off as
time expired. Murray State defeated the Mastodons 3-1.
Offensively IPFW posted
a 13-11 advantage in shots on the afternoon, paced by the eight attempts from
Macdonald. Meghan Doehla added two shots. Fitzharris stayed busy in goal for
the Racers, allowing one goal and making seven saves.

TOLEDO BLANKS IPFW,
5-0
(09/24/02) Toledo, OH.
- Two goals apiece from senior Corrie Hasenjager and junior Melissa Lesage
were more than enough offense for Toledo on Monday afternoon, as the Rockets
blanked IPFW, 5-0, at Scott Park.
The Midnight Blue and
Gold drew first blood at 20:30 on a goal by Lesage. The play developed when
freshman Pam Richard dribbled into the left corner of the penalty box and
delivered a nice cross in the middle to classmate Brittany Lawrence. Lawrence
flicked the ball onto a streaking Lesage, who deposited the ball into the
back of the net for the eventual-game winner.
Toledo struck again just
26 seconds later on freshman Kelly Langenbeck's first collegiate goal. Langenbeck
won a free ball about 25 yards out and lofted a shot over the head of IPFW
goalkeeper Rachel Poor, who had come off her line at 20:56.
Lesage closed out the
first-half scoring at 29:45 with her second tally of the game and team-leading
seventh of the season on a great hustle play. She stole the ball from an IPFW
defender about 30 yards from the goal and proceeded to beat two other Mastodon
defenders and rifle a low, line-drive shot that snuck underneath a diving
Poor. The multiple-goal affair for the Trois Rivieres, PQ native is her fourth
in her career and her third of the season.
Toledo upped its lead
to 4-0 at the 46:20 mark of the second half on the first of Hasenjager's two
goals. She received a pass from freshman Jessica Kluesener and blasted home
her fifth goal of the season from 12 yards out.
Hasenjager closed out
the scoring at 68:38 on another great combination effort from Richard, to
freshman Sarah Crane, to the Dayton, OH native. Richard took a pass around
the midfield circle and found an open Crane, who dribbled deep into IPFW territory.
Crane then crossed the ball into the middle of the penalty box to a waiting
Hasenjager, who finished off the play.
Freshman Molly Patterson
collected her second collegiate shutout and third collegiate victory of her
young career between the posts. Patterson saved four shots as the Rockets'
defense limited the Mastodons to only three shots in the second half and nine
shots total.
For the game IPFW was
out-shot 21-9, as the Rockets blasted past the Mastodons with four goals in
the first half. Rachel Poor finished the afternoon with seven saves in 76
minutes of action.
IPFW will play host to Murray State on Saturday, September 28th at Hefner Soccer Fields. Game time is schedule for 1 p.m. (CST).
RAMBLERS ROLL PAST
MASTODONS, 4-0
(09/19/02) Chicago, IL
- The Loyola women's soccer team scored more goals Thursday night than it
had in its previous three matches combined as they rolled past IPFW, 4-0.
The Ramblers go to 3-2, while the Mastodons fell to 1-4-1.
Loyola dominated the
possession for the whole game and had other chances to add to its lead. Sophomore
Ashley Baron got the scoring going in the 34th minute on a shot from 12 yards
on the right side off of a Taylon feed. Baron and Taylon teamed up to assist
Rachel Radcliffe on the second goal of the match in the 66th minute as Radcliffe
nailed a drop pass from 15 yards out past the IPFW goalkeeper.
The Ramblers struck two
minutes later as a deep pass to a streaking Nierzwicki set up a two-on-one
situation with IPFW's keeper. When the Mastodons Rachel Poor committed to
Nierzwicki on the right side of the box, Nierzwicki centered it to Taylon
who had an open net from six yards. The final goal of the match came on an
error by the goalie. After retrieving an errant Loyola shot, the IPFW's Poor
tried to clear the ball by rolling it to one of her teammates on the right
side of the field. Obviously, not seeing Nierzwicki standing right there,
Gina stepped in front of the pass and had a wide open net to record her first
goal of the season.
Loyola out-shot IPFW
13-9 but only three of the Mastodons shots were on goal. Heather Joseph played
the first half for the Ramblers in between the pipes and Erica Pedini played
