Penn
State Hands IPFW First Loss
Fort
Wayne, IN- In a match that didn't feature a lot of quality
hitting, Penn State outlasted IPFW 3-1, Saturday night at the Gates
Center.
#9 Penn State
(3-3) won by the scores of 30-20, 24-30, 31-29, and 30-27.
After splitting
the first two sets, Penn State looked to have game three all
wrapped up, but the Mastodons staved of five set points, before
falling by that 31-29 score in extras.
That seemed
to be the match, as PSU won a somewhat anticlimactic fourth.
The Nittany
Lions were led by Kevin Wentzel and Keith Kowal with 16
and 15 kills respectively.
MIVA player
of the week Matt Zbyszewski (Sr/Toronto, ON,
Canada) led the IPFW attack with 23 kills and 10 digs for the
double-double. Junior outside hitter Mitch Dreisbach (Mishawaka,
IN) added 10 kills.
Junior setter
Dennis Santiago (Bayamon/Puerto Rico) recorded
46 assists.
Both teams
combined for 35 service errors (IPFW 18-PSU 17). PSU out-hit
the 'Dons .228 to .152. The Volleydons
(2-1) return to action on Wednesday night (1/28,) traveling
to Romeoville, IL, to take on defending NCAA Champion Lewis
College at 7pm.
