Wins Opening Match With Ukraine
Daegu,
South Korea- Amid
heightened security at the World University Games in South Korea,
IPFW Head Volleyball Coach Arnie Ball saw his team win their opening
round match against the Ukraine 3-2.
The U.S.
squad dropped the first two games of the match 25-23, 26-24
before storming back to take games three and four 25-19, 25-20.
The fifth and deciding game went to the U.S. team 27-25.
Before the
match, it was learned that local police and security were tipped
off that Islamic radicals could launch a chemical weapons attack
on the venues. The South Korean Environmental Ministry said
that surveillance and security checks of vehicles have been
increased due to the tip.
More than
7,000 athletes and officials from over 170 countries are participating
in the games, including 137 from the United States and 99 from
Britain.
The U.S.
team will next see Pool "B" action tomorrow against Canada.
The Men's
volleyball portion of the Games will continue until the finals
on August 31st.
Pool "B"
Teams include: United States, Ukraine, Netherlands, Canada,
Denmark, and D.P.R. Korea.
