IPFW WOMEN’S TENNIS TEAM CLOSES OUT SEASON WITH A WIN OVER CLEVELAND STATE, 4-3

(04/15/03) Cleveland, Ohio - The IPFW Women’s tennis team defeated Cleveland State 4-3 in Cleveland, Ohio on Tuesday. The Mastodons took an early 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. Francesca Solari and Jill Carie trailed 7-3 at No. 1 doubles, but ran off six straight games for a 9-7 win over CSU’s Audrey Shade and Paulina Reyes to secure the doubles point. In singles, Francesca Solari downed Audrey Shade 6-2, 6-1; Jill Carie defeated Rebekah Bicksler at No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-2; and Beth Miller outlasted Katie Shears 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the match for the Dons.

“The women came out more mentally focused today and the effort level was an improvement from some of our recent matches,” said Head Coach Eric Burns. “Francesca and Jill’s comeback at No. 1 doubles was key for us today and exemplified the kind of effort we must give at all times no matter what the score. It has been a tough season, but we have some positives to build on for next season. We increased our win total this year from three last year to six, while playing a tougher schedule. We also have everyone returning and a couple of newcomers to add depth and strength to our lineup. If we can continue to improve and get stronger we can be a good team in the future.”

The IPFW women’s tennis team finished the season 6-19.

IPFW Women's Tennis - Fall 2002 Summary

The women's Fall campaign started off with a tough home match against the University of Indianapolis. While the Dons played well and a few matches were close, The Greyhounds (2002 GLVC champions) were too solid and IPFW fell 6-1. Sophomore Jill Carie won the only singles match of the day and freshman Beth Miller and junior Stephanie Blaney teamed to win a match at #2 doubles. The women regrouped the next weekend and had an excellent showing at the Eastern Illinois Invitational. Junior Julie Downs finished runner-up in the C Flight singles division, while Jill Carie made it to the semifinals. Junior Francesca Solari won the consolation bracket in Flight A singles defeating her teammate Stephanie Blaney in the finals.

IPFW picked up its first dual meet win of the year against St. Francis, PA in a tight 4-3 match, but lost 4-1 to Akron in the second match of the day. The St. Francis win was the second victory over a Division I school for IPFW. After another 4-3 win at Franklin College, the women competed at the Ball State Invitational. Jill Carie had another strong performance and finished third in the #6 singles bracket picking up wins against Wright State and Butler, while falling to Dayton. Julie Downs also had a good showing by finishing fourth in the #5 singles bracket. Julie picked up a win against Butler, before falling to Ball State and IUPUI.

The women came home the next week and hosted Oakland University in the first ever night match at the IPFW courts. Playing with a shorthanded team of five (due to injuries), the Dons picked up their second straight win over a Division I team with a 4-3 win. The women then traveled to Detroit Mercy and competed well before falling 6-1. Francesca Solari was a winner at #1 singles and at #1 doubles with Jill Carie.

The following weekend, the Dons hosted Xaiver and Cleveland State. While the women fell 7-0 to an excellent Xaiver team, they rebounded on Sunday and picked up their first shutout against a Division I school, defeating Cleveland State 7-0. With this win, the women's team eclipsed their win total for all of last season. The women 4-4 will return to action on January 25, 2003, when they travel to Ball State for a dual meet at 5:00pm at the Muncie YMCA.
