IPFW MEN’S TENNIS TEAM FALLS TO NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE MID-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

(04/24/03) Dekalb, Ill. - Less then a week ago, the IPFW men’s tennis finished up their regular season with a home match against Northern Illinois. Once again, the Mastodons would have to face the Huskies of Northern Illinois University, this time in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Championship.

Northern Illinois jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Willy Gali and Erick Martinez combined for an 8-0 shutout over IPFW’s Shaun Fisher and Ian Leonhardt in the second position and Stephen Guntly and Ryan Schnack teamed up for an 8-4 decision over the Mastodons Billy Ruxton and Michael Chase at the third slot. That rendered the top-flight match meaningless as play was halted with Raymond VanWasbeek and Aaron Forsberg tied with the Mastodons’ Michael Parker and Daniel Jackson at six games apiece.

In singles competition, Martinez disposed of Ruxton, 6-2, 6-0 in the third spot just before Forsberg completed a 6-1, 6-3, triumph over Fisher at the No. 4 slot. VanWasbeek clinched the victory for Northern Illinois with his 6-3, 6-2 triumph against Leonhardt at the top spot leaving Guntly ahead 6-1, 4-1 over Chase Jr. at the fifth position and Gali up 6-4, 3-2 over Parker at No. 2. Schnack had captured the first set (6-2) against Jackson at the sixth slot before play was halted.

IPFW MEN’S TENNIS GETS BIG WIN OVER CLEVELAND STATE, 4-3

(04/15/03) Cleveland, Ohio - The IPFW Men’s tennis team defeated Cleveland State 4-3 in Cleveland, Ohio on Tuesday. The match was close from the start, but the Mastodons took an early 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. Michael Parker and Daniel Jackson pulled out a 9-8 win in a tiebreaker to secure the point. IPFW went down 3-1 after dropping the first three singles matches and Michael Chase trailed 6-1, 3-1 at No. 4 singles. But, Chase turned his match around and pulled out a tough come from behind victory 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 over CSU’s Jordan Reynolds. Jessy Nikho won convincingly over Adam Mercurio at No. 6 singles 6-4, 6-2. With the team match tied at 3-3, Daniel Jackson trailed CSU’s Shawn Whitehouse 6-2, 2-0 at No. 5 singles. But, Jackson rallied in the second set and took the set 7-6 (7-5 in the tiebreaker). Jackson dominated the third set and secured the final point for the Don’s with a 6-1 victory for the final 4-3 score.

“This was our best overall team effort of the season,” said Head Coach Eric Burns. “We never gave up. The guys ran down every ball and just refused to lose. We were the mentally focused, which is something we have struggled with in matches this season. Hopefully, this match will show the team the effort level we must have for each match. I’m so proud of this effort.”

IPFW now 7-17, will host Northern Illinois on Friday in a Mid-American Conference match-up. The match is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the IPFW Tennis Courts.

IPFW MEN’S TENNIS FALLS TO ILLINOIS-CHICAGO, 7-0

(04/12/03) Fort Wayne, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis team received solid doubles performances from Michael Parker and Daniel Jackson on Saturday afternoon, but it was not enough to hold off visiting Illinois-Chicago, as the Flames went home with a 7-0 victory.

IPFW's Parker and Jackson defeated UIC’s Howrey and Wonneberg 8-4 in No.1 doubles action. The Flames would win No. 2 and No. 3 doubles earning two quick points. IPFW would have two great battles as Parker went three sets in a losing effort to Yevgen Ryeznik (4-6, 6-4, 3-6). At the No. 6 singles Jackson also went three sets, before falling to Niel Ahluwalia (0-6, 6-4, 4-6).

IPFW will be back in action on Sunday April 13th when they host the University of Toledo and Tri-State University.

WESTERN MICHIGAN BLANKS IPFW, 7-0

(03/28/03) Kalamazoo, Mich. - The IPFW men's tennis team dropped the match against Western Michigan University Friday afternoon, 7-0.

WMU had no problems with IPFW, who joined the Mid-American Conference this season for men's tennis. Opening play with singles instead of doubles because of scheduling with the women's match that was taking place later in the day, the Broncos did not drop a set in sweeping all six matches. Western Michigan went on to win the three doubles matches easily as well, losing a total of four games.

IPFW will hit the road again Sunday, March 30th, traveling to the University of Dayton for a non-conference match-up. The match is scheduled to get under way at 2 p.m. (EST)

IPFW FALLS TO VALPARAISO, 3-4

(03/22/03) Warsaw, Ind. - The IPFW men’s tennis team lost a tough non-conference match to Valparaiso University, 3-4, at the Warsaw Racquet Club on Saturday afternoon. The Mastodons fell to 5-9 (0-2 MAC), while the Valparaiso University improved to 2-7.

IPFW took the doubles matches winning at the number one and two spots. Top duo Michael Parker and Daniel Jackson defeated Ben Dunham-Freer and Jeff Vrabel, 8-3. The number two team of Shaun Fisher and Ian Leonhardt lost to Valpo’s Chris Widmeyer and Mike Menghini by the score of 8-3. The Mastodons grabbed the number three point of Michael Chase Jr. and Billy Ruxton who defeated Tyler Neemann and Nathan Gordon, 8-5.

IPFW would only win two of the singles matches as they fell to Valparaiso University. Dunham-Freer downed Leonhardt, 6-1, 7-5, at number one. Parker cruised past Vrabel, 6-4, 6-4, at number two. Valpo’s Wedmeyer, at the number three, won over Ruxton, 6-0, 6-3. Neemann knocked off IPFW’s Fisher, 6-0, 6-2, at number four. Gordon was overpowered Chase Jr., 6-2, 6-4 at number five, while IPFW’s Jackson closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Adams at number six.

IPFW will return to the court Friday, March 28th as the travel to Western Michigan University. The match is set to begin at 10 a.m. (EST).

BUFFALO BULLS ROLL OVER MASTODONS, 7-0

(03/20/03) Buffalo, NY - The IPFW men’s tennis team lost their second Mid-American Conference match 7-0 to Buffalo University at the University Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon. The Bulls improved to 10-8 (1-0 MAC), while the Mastodons fell to 5-8 (0-2 MAC).

Buffalo swept the three doubles matches. Top duo Randy Rocchio and Nick Zieziula downed Michael Parker and Daniel Jackson, 8-5. The number two team of Rannga Prayudha and Josh Liederman defeated Billy Ruxton and Michael Chase Jr. by an identical 8-5 score. The sweep was complete with the number three team of Fery Kasiman and Rohan Raikar defeating Matt Muns and Jessy Nikho, 8-3.

Buffalo also won all six singles matches in straight sets. Kasiman downed Parker, 6-1, 6-2, at number one. Rocchio rolled past Ruxton, 6-0, 6-2, at number two. Zieziula, moving up to number three, won over Chase, 6-1, 6-0. Liederman knocked off Jackson, 6-1, 6-1, at number four. Prayudha defated Nikho, 6-0, 6-1 at number five and Raikar closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Scott Beasley at number six.

IPFW will return to the court Saturday, March 22nd as the host Valparaiso University. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. (EST).

IPFW MEN’S TENNIS TEAM EARNS WIN OVER STONEHILL COLLEGE, 7-2

(03/13/03) Hilton Head, S.C. - The IPFW men's tennis team defeated Stonehill College at Hilton Head 7-0, Thursday afternoon. The Mastodons won three singles matches and all three doubles matches. IPFW is now 5-7 this season.

Singles were close at nearly every position. Positions one and three all went to three sets with the Mastodons splitting the winnings. At No. 1, Ian Leonhardt won the first set 7-6 (5), dropped the second by the score of 0-6, and came back to take the third set and the match by the same 1-0.

IPFW would take the No. 5 and No. 6 singles with no problems and Michael Chase shut out Matt Hansen 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot. Daniel Jackson also earned a win in the No. 6 singles match in two sets.

The IPFW doubles team of Parker/Jackson, Leonhardt/Fisher, and Chase/Ruxton took all three matches for the early led.

IPFW will return to action on Thursday, March 20th as they travel to the University of Buffalo. The matches are set to begin at 10 a.m. (EST).

IPFW MEN’S TENNIS TEAM FALLS TO BUCKNELL AND PENN STATE

(03/12/03) Hilton Head, S.C. - In their early match of the day, IPFW fell to Bucknell 0-7, and then face Big Ten opponent Penn State University, which shut out the Mastodons 7-0 at the VanDeMeer Tennis Center in Hilton Head, South Carolina Wednesday.

Nick Denefrio and Gerald DiChiara got things started for the Bisons with a hard fought 9-8 (3) victory over IPFW’s Michael Parker and Daniel Jackson at the first doubles flight. Bucknell’s Todd Jacobs and Asher Salam then teamed up to defeat the Mastodons Shaun Fisher and Ian Leonhardt at number two, 8-6. IPFW won the third doubles flight, but the Bison still came away with the doubles point.

In singles play, Denefrio opened it up with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Leonhardt at the first flight. Jacobs followed with a straight-set 6-3, 6-2 victory against Parker at number two.

Salam went on to defeat Billy Ruxton, 6-3, 6-1, at the third flight, while Joe Menezes picked up a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Fisher at fourth singles. Michael Chase Jr. gave DiChiara a battle at number five, before DiChiara came out on top in a 3-6, 6-2, 10-3 TB match. Aaron Saperstein rounded out the Bucknell scoring with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at number six over Jackson.

The afternoon match at the Hilton Head Beach Resort and Tennis Club saw the Nittany Lions control the match over Mastodons winning 7-0.

Penn State dominated the match early and didn’t let up throughout the match. Jim Crowell and Brad Nudell defeated Shaun Fisher and Ian Leonhardt (8-1) at No. 2 doubles to gain the doubles point for the Nittany Lions.

In singles action all six players for Penn State won in straight sets. IPFW was not able to score a point in the number four, five, and six spots.

BUTLER UNIVERSITY TOO STRONG FOR IPFW

IPFW MEN’S TENNIS TEAM DROPS MAC SEASON OPENER TO BALL STATE SATURDAY IN MUNCIE

(02/08/03) Muncie, Ind. -The IPFW men’s tennis team lost to Ball State University 7-0 Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Cardinal’s record to 3-2 (1-0 MAC), while the Mastodons are 0-1 (0-1 MAC).

Ball State won all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. The Cardinals then swept the Mastodons in all six singles matches.

IPFW Men's Tennis - Fall 2002 Summary

Starting with wins over Tri-State and Bethel, the men then suffered a tough home loss against Indiana Wesleyan, a top 20 NAIA program. The men fell by the score of 5-2 in a very close match.

Next, the men traveled to the Eastern Illinois Invitational. Freshman Michael Chase Jr. had a good showing, as he finished 1st in the consolation bracket in C flight singles. Freshman Justin Clark and Freshman Matt Muns advanced to the D flight consolation final with Clark winning the final. Junior Michael Parker and Freshman Daniel Jackson reached the semifinals of the A flight doubles and lost to the eventual champions from Bradley in a close 8-6 match.

The men traveled to Franklin College the next week and picked up an easy 7-0 victory against the Grizzlies, before traveling to the Ball State Invitational. There were many strong teams at this Invitational, including all of the Mid-American Conference teams except Buffalo. While no one was able to pick up a victory on the weekend, there were several good performances, including sophomore IanLeonhardt against Butler's Brandon Gill. Gill prevailed in a tight two-setter, 7-5, 6-3. The men traveled to another tough tournament at the University of Louisville the following weekend. This tournament included several nationally ranked programs including the University of Kentucky, a top 10 program. While the men didn't pick up a victory in this tournament, there were more good performances. Michael Parker played a close two-setter with the University of Kentucky's Matt Emery. Emery was a top 15 junior player in the U.S. and had competed in junior tournaments at the French Open and Wimbledon. Emery won 6-3, 7-5 in a close match. Michael Chase Jr. also lost a close match against IUPUI 9-8.

The men returned home for dual matches against Xaiver and Cleveland State. While Xaiver defeated the Dons 7-0, Michael Parker and Daniel Jackson were able to pick up a win at #1 doubles. On Sunday, the men hosted Cleveland State. The Dons jumped out to a 1-0 lead by securing the doubles point, as Justin Clark and Michael Chase Jr. won a close match at #3 doubles. In singles, the men lost two three set match and a close two-setter at #1, #2 and #3 singles and trailed 3-1. But the lower part of the singles line-up came through. Michael Chase Jr. won his match at #5 singles and Daniel Jackson won at #6. With the match at 3-3, senior Shaun Fisher fought through a tough three set match, securing a 4-3 win for the Mastodons.

The men's team (4-2) will be back in action on February 8, 2003, in its first ever Mid-American Conference match at Ball State. The match will be at the Muncie YMCA, starting at 11:00 am.

IPFW MEN'S TENNIS PROGRAM BUILDS UP FOR 2002-2003 SEASON WITH FIVE SIGNEES

 

(05/23/02) Fort Wayne, Ind. - IPFW men's tennis team has signed four high school players and one junior college player to a National Letters of Intent.  The Mastodons signed Billy Ruxton (Delta H.S. - Muncie, Indiana), Daniel Jackson (Delta H.S. - Muncie, Indiana), Justin Clark (Winchester H.S. - Winchester, Indiana), Michael Chase Jr. (St. Thomas Aquinas H.S. - Lenexa, Kansas), and Michael Parker (Tyler Junior College - Austin Texas).  Michael Chase Jr. and Michael Parker will also receive the Chancellor's Merit Scholarship this fall for their academic performances.

 

Billy Ruxton (Delta H.S. - Muncie, Indiana) was 2nd team All-State in singles for two years and honorable mention All-State singles for one year.  During his four years, he helped guide his team to four sectionals and four regional titles.  Ruxton was selected as a member of the Indiana Boy’s High School All-Star team, which will face an All-Star Team from Kentucky this summer. Majoring in Business.

 

Daniel Jackson (Delta H.S. - Muncie, Indiana) was First Team All-State in doubles for three years.  He finished runner-up in doubles in the 2001 Indiana State Championships.  During his four years his team won four sectionals and four regional titles.  Jackson was selected as a member of the Indiana Boy’s High School All-Star Team. Majoring in Biology.

 

Justin Clark (Winchester H.S. -Winchester, Indiana) was honorable mention All-State in doubles in 2001. He advanced to the final round at the regional tournament and finished the season with a 19-2 record.  Clark was selected as an alternate for the Indiana Boy’s High School All-Star Team. Majoring in Education.

 

Michael Chase Jr. (St. Thomas Aquinas H.S. - Lenexa, Kansas) was a state championship qualifier as a freshman in singles and a state qualifier in doubles his sophomore year.  He served as team captain for two years. Attained a United States Tennis Association (USTA) Missouri Valley Section singles ranking him 21st in 2001.  He currently holds a 4.0 GPA at St. Thomas Aquinas High School.   Chase Jr. will receive the Chancellor's Merit Scholarship this fall while majoring in business.

 

Michael Parker (Tyler Junior College - Austin, Texas) just graduated from Tyler Junior College with a 3.3 GPA and will receive a Chancellor’s Merit Scholarship this fall.  His team just won the NJCAA Division II National Championship.  Parker was runner-up in flight C doubles at the national tournament.  He is currently ranked No. 46 in singles and No. 24 in doubles in the NJCAA Division II.  Parker will be majoring in business while attending IPFW.
