IPFW Splits Doubleheader with Bulldogs
Indianapolis, IN - IPFW Softball split their double header at Butler on Sunday afternoon. The Mastodons took game one, 8-4 while the Bulldogs took the nightcap, 4-0.
After three quiet innings in game one both teams began scoring. In the fourth the 'Dons posted their first run with two outs on the board. Beatrice Pedraza reached on a fielder's choice and after stealing second was brought in by Angela Pasquali's single and a fielding error by right field. Butler posted two runs in the bottom of the fourth, their only lead of the game.
The 'Dons bats kept going in the fifth, scoring three runs on two hits. Once again the Mastodons had two outs on the board before the action really started. Jenna Beachy was walked while Kayla Vargo singled to left. A homerun by Michelle Meighen cleared the bases and took the 'Dons to a 4-2 lead.
The Bulldogs couldn't answer as IPFW kept adding runs. In the sixth wild pitches were on the menu as Nancy Herron was walked and was advanced to third after an out and a wild pitch. Abby Liden was walked as well and a wild pitch would move her to third and Herron came home. Yet another wild pitch brought in Liden taking the 'Dons lead to 6-2.
IPFW added two more in the seventh after Vargo hit a double to bright in Ty Lambert. A hit by Meighen brought in Jessica Miller who pinch ran for Vargo to give the 'Dons a six run lead, 8-2. The Bulldogs would add two more runs in the bottom of the seventh finishing the game, 8-4.
Katie Aspegren took the win after pitching the entire game. She struck out 12 of 31 batters faced while only giving up three walks and five hits.
Vargo went 3-4 with a run and an RBI and Meighen went 3-3 with one run and four RBIs.
In the nightcap scoring didn't start until the bottom of the fifth inning when Butler posted three runs off of three hits. The Bulldogs added one more in the sixth to finish the Mastodons, 4-0.
Jenna Connelly pitched the loss for the 'Dons after giving up eight hits and striking out five.
The Mastodons (3-17) will host Dayton on Tuesday (3/28) at 1 pm and Michigan State on Wednesday (3/29) at 3 pm at the IPFW Softball Complex. Both dates are double headers.
