Vargo's Walk-Off Grand Slam Lifts IPFW
Fort Wayne , IN - IPFW freshman designated player Kayla Vargo drilled a one-out grand slam in the bottom of the 8th inning, to give the Mastodons a 7-3 win over Wright State on Friday afternoon at the IPFW Softball Field.
Vargo's blast was a frozen rope that sailed over the left field wall.
The Mastodons (2-15) opened the scoring in the game in the 3rd inning as Vargo singled to center field scoring senior catcher Kacie Stone, who had doubled earlier in the inning.
IPFW increased the lead to 2-0 in the 4th inning when Stone singled to right scoring sophomore right fielder Natalie Clark.
Wright State (0-16) took the lead in the top of the 5th inning, by scoring three runs on only one hit. The Raiders took advantage of two Mastodon errors in the inning.
The 'Dons knotted the game at three in their half of the fifth on a nice piece of hitting by Clark. Clark pushed the ball to the right side of the infield allowing Vargo to score from third.
That set up the extra inning heroics of Vargo. The blast was Vargo's first collegiate homer.
Sophomore Jenna Connelly started the game for IPFW and went 4 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking five. She only gave up two hits, but three unearned runs and did not figure in the decision.
Freshman Katie Aspegren came on to finish out the fifth inning. She got the win, tossing 3 2/3 innings of one-hit ball.
Game two of today's double-header was called because of unplayable conditions.
The Mastodons return to action tomorrow, traveling to Cleveland State for a 1pm double header with the Vikings.
