IPFW Takes Fourth at JU Invitational

Jacksonville, FL - IPFW started off their season on the road at the Jacksonville University/Best Western Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The 'Dons dropped all four games, taking fourth in the invitational.

IPFW v. Southern Miss
IPFW's first game on Friday started off runless until the third when the Golden Eagles put two up in the third. Southern Miss didn't stop there, adding ten more in the next two innings to end the game early, 12-0.

Katie Aspegren took the loss for the 'Dons after pitching four innings. Heather DeVore recorded IPFW's lone hit, going 1-2 in the season opener.

IPFW v. Armstrong Atlantic
In the nightcap, the 'Dons fell to Armstrong Atlantic, 8-7. AASU was on the board first, putting up two in the third, but IPFW rallied back, posting three runs in the bottom of the third. After Beatrice Pedraza was walked, Kacie Stone hit a single to right center. Pedraza was brought in on a fielding error. Wild pitches brought in Stone and Abby Liden to put the 'Dons up 3-2 going into the fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Mastodons added three more runs after three singles loaded the bases, DeVore brought in one on her single. Kayla Vargo brought in the next run while the third was scored on an error by the shortstop. IPFW was up 6-2 going into the sixth.

Armstrong Atlantic wouldn't go quietly though, scoring four in the sixth and two in the seventh. The 'Dons tried to answer back but fell short, only scoring one, falling 8-7.

DeVore went 2-3 with one run and one RBI. Jenna Beachy and Stone each went 2-4 with a run while Liden scored two runs. Natalie Clark took the loss for the 'Dons after pitching two innings. Aspegren struck out eight batters in her five innings.

IPFW v. Jacksonville
In the morning game with Jacksonville, the Dons fell 8-0. The Dolphins were on the board early, posting their first run in the first inning. In the second they added five and two more in the fourth.

Jenna Connelly took the loss, allowing eight hits and eight runs in four innings pitched. Stone went 2-2 for the Mastodons.

IPFW v. Jacksonville
In the nightcap, IPFW faced Jacksonville again, but fell 6-0 to take fourth at the Jacksonville University/Best Western Invitational.

Jacksonville put up three runs in the second and sixth innings to clench their third place finish.

Aspegren took her second loss for the season. She gave up nine hits and six runs, but struck out seven batters.

IPFW will now return home to get ready for the Rebel Games in Orlando, Florida starting on March 4th. They will play 12 games in six days starting off with a pair against Maine. Their home opener is March 22 against Michigan State. The doubleheader is slated to start at 3 pm.
