Flyers Take Two From Mastodons

Dayton, OH - IPFW faced the Dayton Flyers is a double header Sunday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium. The Flyers took both contests by finals of 4-1 and 7-6.

In the opener, Dayton was out front first, posting one run each in the bottoms of the fourth and fifth innings. Kacie Stone hit one out of the park in the top of the sixth to score the 'Dons lone run for the game. The Flyers would add two more in the bottom of the sixth to take the game 4-1.

Stone went 1-3 with the run and an RBI. Natalie Clark took the loss after pitching four innings. She gave up five hits and just one run. Katie Aspegren came in to close out the game, she struck out three in her two innings.

The nightcap started off on a better note for the 'Dons. In the first, with two outs on the board, Jenna Beachy hit a single to short for the 'Dons first base runner. Kayla Vargo came up next and knocked one over the left field fence. IPFW was up 2-0, and held that lead until the bottom of the fourth.

With IPFW up 2-1, Dayton came up in the bottom of the fourth and took the 'Dons lead away after posting two runs. In the bottom of the fifth the Flyers posted four more to take a 7-2 lead.

IPFW came close in the top of the seventh. With two base runners, Abby Liden came up and loaded the bases with her single. Stone swung for the fences again but came up a bit short. Her double would bring in two to cut the Flyers lead to 7-4.

The Mastodons weren't finished there. Runners were on second and third when Vargo hit a single to right field to bring in two more to cut the Flyers lead to 7-6. The Mastodons could not bring in Vargo to tie the game up. Dayton took the nightcap, 7-6.

Vargo went 2-4 with a run and four RBIs. Beachy, Ty Lambert, and Brooke Walter each went 1-3 in the nightcap.

Jenna Connelly took the loss after pitching 4.2 innings. Out of 28 batters faced, Connelly struck out four and walked two while giving up 11 hits and seven runs. Aspegren came in to close out the game, striking out one with four hits.

The Mastodons will wrap up their home schedule with another double header against Dayton on Monday April 24th at the IPFW Softball Field. Game starts at 3 pm. IPFW will then head to Ball State on Tuesday, April 25th for a double header starting at 3 pm before finishing out their season at Oakland on Wednesday (4/26).
