Stone's Homer Lifts 'Dons to Win
Fort Wayne , IN - Junior catcher Kacie Stone hit a shot over the left center field fence to take the lead back for the 'Dons in the bottom of the sixth, leading IPFW to the win in game two. IPFW defeated Valparaiso 4-3 in the nightcap after falling to the Crusaders in the opener, 1-0.
A single shot to left center put the Crusaders on the board and gave them the win in game one. The Crusaders scored their run on their lone hit of the game. The Mastodons posted three hits in game one.
Katie Aspegren received the loss for the opener after pitching the entire game. She struck out five and walked five, taking her record to 5-12.
Brooke Walter went 1-2 for the 'Dons while Jenna Beachy and Kayla Vargo each went 1-3 in the opener.
The nightcap started off on a nicer note for the Mastodons. With two outs on the board Beachy steps up and singles to center field. Vargo came up next and hit her second home run of the season sending it over the left field fence. The 'Dons were up 2-0 in the bottom of the first.
The Crusaders would post two runs in the fifth to tie the game up. In the bottom of the sixth Stone knocked her homer to take a 3-2 lead. Beachy doubled and was brought in by Vargo once again as she also doubled to center field. The Mastodons were up 4-2 going into the Crusaders last at bats.
Valpo would add one in the seventh, but with two outs on the board the Crusaders last batter would look at her last pitch to end the game 4-3.
Jenna Connelly took the win for the Mastodons, pitching the entire game. Connelly gave up nine hits while walking one and striking out six.
Vargo went 2-2 with a run and 3 RBIs. Beachy went 2-3 with two runs and Stone went 1-3 with a run and an RBI.
The Mastodons will travel to the University of Dayton for a double header on Sunday starting at noon. The 'Dons will then host the Flyers on Monday in a rescheduled double header starting at 3 pm. After Monday IPFW will finish out their season on the road at Ball State and Oakland next week.
