IPFW Splits with Valparaiso
Valparaiso, IN - The Mastodons traveled to Valparaiso for a second time to take on the Crusaders in a double-header. Valpo took game one, 9-1 in six innings, while the Mastodons took the nightcap, 5-1.
The Crusaders came out swinging in game one, recording 12 hits. Valpo would post a run in the first and then eight more over three innings to defeat the Mastodons 9-1 in a shortened game.
The Mastodons were held to just two hits in the opener with Abby Liden and Jenna Beachy each going 1-3. Katie Aspegren took the loss for the 'Dons after pitching 3.2 innings. Aspegren struck out five while walking just two.
In the nightcap, after being held scoreless for three innings, the Mastodons bats started to heat up. IPFW scored first in the top of fourth before the Crusaders answered back in the bottom to tie the game up. IPFW would answer back in the sixth and seventh, posting four more runs and holding the Crusaders to their single run for the win, 5-1.
Jenna Connelly pitched the entire game, posting her third win. She struck out five while walking two after giving up just three hits.
Kayla Vargo went 3-4 with a run and two RBIs. Liden, Beachy, and Michelle Meighen each went 2-4. Beachy scored two runs while Meighen brought in three.
The Mastodons (8-26) have gone 5-3 over the last week. On Tuesday IPFW will travel to Indiana University for a single game starting at 4 pm. Their next home series is April 20th against the Valparaiso Crusaders. Game time is 3 pm.
