Mastodons Split Twinbill with Wildcats

Fort Wayne, IN - The Mastodons split the afternoon doubleheader with the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats Monday afternoon. IPFW took the opener, 2-1 while IWU took the nightcap, 3-2.

The Mastodons were on the board first in game one after Michelle Meighen reached on an error in the second inning and was moved to third by Jessica Mast and Beatrice Pedraza's singles. Ty Lambert brought her in with her hit to the right side. The 'Dons were up 1-0.

IPFW would post their second run in the bottom of the fourth after Ashley Johnson hit one to the pitcher . Abby Liden moved her to second and Jenna Beachy's walk put Johnson in scoring position. All it took was a wild pitch and the 'Dons were up 2-0.

Indiana Wesleyan would put their lone run up in the fifth but it wasn't enough, the Mastodons took game one by a final of 2-1.

Katie Aspegren took the win, her third of the season. She struck out eight batters and walked just one with two hits in the complete game. Mast was 2-3 with Lambert receiving the lone RBI.

In game two, the Wildcats got their bats going early. In the first they would post one run and then hold the Mastodons scoreless until the bottom of the fifth.

Johnson hit her first home run of the season to score the 'Dons first run of the game. Liden doubled to right center and a hit by Beachy would bring her in to put IPFW up 2-1 going into the sixth inning.

Things were looking good for the Mastodons until the top of the seventh inning. One hit and three errors was all it took to take the lead and the win away from the Mastodons. IPFW couldn't get the bats going in the right direction in the bottom of the seventh and Indiana Wesleyan would take game two by a final of 3-2.

Jenna Connelly took the loss, she is now 1-12. In her complete game she gave up just four hits and two walks while striking out six. Liden went 3-3 with one run and Beachy was 2-3 with an RBI.

The Mastodons (4-24) will host the Butler Bulldogs for a doubleheader starting at 3 pm on Tuesday April 11th. The Mastodons will make up last week's postponed double header with Notre Dame College on Thursday at the IPFW Softball Field starting at 3 pm.
