Press Release NOVEMBER
30, 2004 Campbell Tosses in 18 in Loss at UTEP El Paso, TX - The University of Texas-El Paso Miners used a 17-11 run, over the last seven minutes of the game, to top IPFW, 67-58, at the Don Haskins Center on Tuesday night. Freshman guard Pete Campbell (Muncie, IN) had a career night, going 7-10 from the floor, including 4-6 from behind the arc, for a team-high 18 points. UTEP (4-1) and IPFW played a back and forth ballgame. IPFW jumped out to an early 14-5 lead, only to see UTEP battle back to take a 32-31 lead at the half. The Mastodons were shooting well at 46%. But, defensively, the 'Dons had some trouble containing the Miners' Omar Thomas, who led UTEP with thirteen at intermission. In the second half, UTEP opened up an eight point lead, that IPFW chipped away at. Campbell drilled a three, and senior center David Simon (Vernon Hills, IL) threw down a feed from guard Byron Malone (Indianapolis, IN), cutting the Miners' lead to three (50-47), at the 8-minute media timeout. But, UTEP's Jason Williams got a couple of quick layups to open it back up, and the Miners held on for the win. "We are really going to win a lot of ballgames if we play like the way we did tonight," said IPFW head coach Doug Noll. "We really took this team, who had received some Top-30 votes, to the wire. They went to the line a lot more than we did tonight (23-11), but that is life on the road." Williams led UTEP with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Joining Campbell in double figures for IPFW (2-4) was Simon, who played 34 minutes and scored 14 points, to go along with eight rebounds. For the fifth time in six games, IPFW out-rebounded their opponent. The Mastodons won the battle of the boards 30-26. They also shot better from the field than UTEP (47.7%-46.0%), but they had trouble taking care of the basketball with 22 turnovers. The Mastodons will look for their third win of the season on Saturday night (12/4) traveling to Morehead State University for a 7pm tipoff.
