Press Release NOVEMBER
23,
2004 IPFW No Match for #21 Notre Dame South Bend, IN- The 21st ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame opened the game on a 12-0 run, and never looked back, beating IPFW, 73-45 on Tuesday night at the Joyce Center. IPFW started slowly, and it cost them dearly. The Mastodons didn't get on the scoreboard until the 13:19 mark of the first half, on a tip-in by freshman center Charles Campbell (Chicago, IL). "I don't know if we've ever had that before," (Nine stops to open a game) said Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey. "We were pretty active and we were contesting. Jordan (Cornette) helped us in the post. W
hen your big guys are active and up on the boards, it's fun to watch. "After you come out and don't score for the first ten minutes of the game, there's nothing left to do but to play the game," IPFW head coach Doug Noll said. "We were very pleased at the half. Our goal was to be within ten because they have been averaging about 48 points in the first half and about 28 points in the second half, in their three games. We really felt that if we could get out of the first half within ten, we would be make our run in the second half." The Irish held a 30-18 lead at the intermission.
In the second half, IPFW tried to make a run at Notre Dame. Sophomore guard Byron Malone (Indianapolis, IN) knocked down a couple of threes, getting the 'Dons to within eleven, but that is as close as they would get. "The Irish defense is good," Malone said. "Once you get by guards, Chris (Thomas) and Chris (Quinn), you have a tree right there, and you have to dish it off or try to shoot." Notre Dame guard Chris Quinn quickly stopped the IPFW run with a few treys of his own. Quinn finished the contest with a game-high 15 points, sending IPFW to its second loss of the season. Four Irish hit for double figures in the game. Along with Quinn, Dennis Latimore tossed in 12, Torin Francis had 11, and Chris Thomas added ten. For the Mastodons, sophomore guard Beau Bauer (Walton, IN) was the only one to crack double figures, with twelve. Byron Malone had nine, on three triples, and freshman Pete Campbell (Muncie, IN) also added nine. Notre Dame moves
to 2-0 on the season, while IPFW falls to 2-2. The Mastodons return
to action on Friday night (11/26), hosting Air Force at 6pm.
