2004 Mastodons Use “Q's” for a “W” Fort Wayne, IN- IPFW got double-doubles from Quintin Carouthers and Quintin Butler in downing Grand Valley State 61-54, Saturday night at Memorial Coliseum, before a homecoming crowd of 3,810. “Q” Carouthers (So/G/Flint, MI) tossed in 16 points and grabbed ten rebounds. “Q” Butler (Jr/F/Greenwood, SC) scored 13 points and also hauled down ten rebounds for the ‘Dons. In a game that featured 12 blocks by Grand Valley State’s Callistus Eziukwu, the Mastodons and Lakers played a close first half. IPFW led by one (27-26) at the intermission. In the second half, the Mastodons never trailed. Butler helped open up a three point lead with a steal and slam. Then it was forward Justin Hawkins’ (So/Garrett, IN) turn to light it up. Hawkins hit a pair of threes to give IPFW an eight point cushion. Hawkins, who played his best game ever in an IPFW uniform, scored 14 points on the night and was a perfect 3-3 from behind the arc. IPFW held a decisive 48-36 margin over GVSU in rebounding, and survived a poor shooting night (28.8% from the floor). The Lakers Mike Hall tied Carouthers for game-high scoring honors with sixteen. With the win, IPFW is now over .500 for the first time ever as a Division I program (2-1). The will travel to South Bend, Indiana on Tuesday to face the 23rd ranked Fighting Irish. Game time at the Joyce Center is 7:30pm.
