Butler and Bauer Double up Tigers

Memphis, TN – IPFW got career nights from junior forward Quintin Butler, and sophomore guard Beau Bauer, in topping Savannah State 71-60, in the consolation game of the 2004 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Memphis, Tennessee, Saturday night.

Butler (Jr/F/Greenwood, SC) scored a game-high 20 points and hauled down 19 rebounds. His 19 rebounds set one Coaches vs. Cancer Classic tournament record and tied two others. Butler's 19 rebounds was an individual single game record. It topped the mark of 16 set by Udonis Haslem of Florida in 2001, against Temple University. The former Mr. South Carolina also tied the tournament record for rebounds at the half (10) and defensive rebounds (12), both with Haslem.

Bauer (So/G/Walton, IN) registered the first double-double of his career with the Mastodons. Bauer scored 15 points and grabbed a career-high ten rebounds.

The Mastodons (1-1) maintained a lead through most of the game. Savannah State (0-2), however, would not let IPFW run away with it. They would hang around until the 9:47 mark in the second half. That is when the Mastodons opened up and 11 point lead (53-45) on a Bauer three-pointer, and a Jason Malone (Fr/G/Indianapolis,IN) fast-break jumper.

"I was please with our kids, but it took us until halftime to really get going," said IPFW head coach Doug Noll. "We are a young team, and when David Simon gets back, we will be a completely different team."

Savannah was able to stay close on the scoring of Donald Carson and Josh Barker, who each tallied 18 points in the contest.

IPFW owned the glass, out rebounding the Tigers 57-38.

Peter Campbell (Fr/G/Muncie, IN) also registered in double figures for IPFW. Campbell tossed in 13 points. Sophomore guard Quintin Carouthers (Flint, MI) also added nine.

After splitting games in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, IPFW will return home to host Grand Valley State, on Homecoming, November 20th at 8pm.

Note: Savannah State Head Coach Edward Daniels did not coach in the game. He was serving a one-game NCAA suspension for using an illegal player last season.
