Press Release NOVEMBER
11,
2004 Patriots' Missiles Shoot Down IPFW Memphis, TN – George Mason University shot 7-9 from behind the arc in the first half, in the opening round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic against IPFW, on Thursday night at the FedEx Forum. The Patriots used that cushion to hold off the Mastodons 69-51. That barrage of bombs was part of a 23-4 run, that took George Mason from a two point lead to a 21 point margin. Mason guards Tim Burns and John Vaughn combined for five of the seven threes. "We have four guys that can really shoot the three," according to GMU head coach Jim Larranga. "You never know how you are going to come out and play, but I was extremely pleased that they all came out very aggressive, looking execute our offense and sharing the ball." The Patriots held a 45-24 lead at the half, but the Mastodons came out and played patient basketball in the second half. At the 16-minute mark, the 'Dons cut the lead to 16 on a layup by sophomore guard Beau Bauer (Walton, IN). And, with nine minutes left in the game, IPFW crawled back to eleven on a three-pointer from freshman guard Jason Malone (Indianapolis, IN). But, that is as close as the Mastodons would get in the game. "If you take those eight minutes out of the first half, we played a decent basketball game, for the first game of the year," IPFW head coach Doug Noll said. "I give George Mason a lot of credit. It was a struggle for us because we let their pressure get to us. We made unforced errors and took bad shots, but we made adjustments and got to within eleven. We just ran out of gas." For the game, IPFW was led by junior forward Quintin Butler (Greenwood, SC) with 12 points and nine rebounds. Jason Malone added nine, and sophomore guard Quintin Carouthers added eight. George Mason was led by Lamar Butler with 16 points. Forward Jai Lewis added 12, and three other Patriots scored in double figures. IPFW will face either Memphis or Savannah State on Saturday night, on the final day of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
