Press Release NOVEMBER
1,
2004 Butler Leads IPFW past Huntington Fort Wayne, IN – A highly ranked NAIA opponent, no David Simon, and opening night jitters. All three were overcome by IPFW on Monday night, as the Mastodons opened up the 2004-05 season with an 87-77 win over Huntington College at the War Memorial Coliseum. The Mastodons used a 25 point, 12 rebound, double-double effort from newcomer Quintin Butler (Greenwood, SC) and balanced scoring to put away a gritty Foresters’ squad. The visitors came out and opened up an early eight point lead on the Mastodons, but by the 12-minute mark of the opening half, IPFW had erased that lead and built a 10 point cushion of its own. The ‘Dons would go into half-time leading by five, with sophomore guard Beau Bauer (Walton, IN) leading the way with 11 points, including three triples. Huntington College battled back and took their only lead of the second half with about 8-minutes remaining, on a jumper by Doug Scheckler. The freshman from Columbia City, Indiana tossed in 19 points. But, IPFW would use a couple of Butler baskets, and a thunderous dunk by sophomore Quintin Carouthers (Flint, MI) to open it back up late, and hold on for the win. Four Mastodons hit for double figures in the game. Along with Butler, Carouthers and Bauer each had 16 points, and freshman guard Jason Malone (Indianapolis, IN) chipped in twelve. The Foresters also got a 19 point night from junior forward Chase Verba. The Mastodons will get another good test on Thursday night (11/4), hosting Hillsdale College at 7pm. Note: David Simon dressed, but did not play. ~Dons~ |
