Hot Shooting Musketeers Hold off IPFW

Cincinnati, OH – Xavier University did miss some shots against IPFW, on Tuesday night in Cincinnati, Ohio. It just didn't seem like they did. The Musketeers hit on nearly 60-percent of their attempts, on the way to an 80-74 win over the Mastodons.

Both teams shot extremely well in the first half. After falling behind 7-0 to begin the contest, IPFW got their legs and began to light it up themselves. Freshman forward Pete Campbell (Muncie, IN) hit three jumpers, and senior center David Simon (Vernon Hills, IL) hit four of his first five baskets, giving IPFW a five point lead at 32-27, with just over four minutes left.

But, Xavier went on a 14-7 run to close out the half, and go into half-time with a 43-38 lead.

Early in the second half, Xavier came out and drilled triple after triple to take a 12 point lead at 64-52.

The Mastodons hung around, and after two fast-break layups by Justin Hawkins (So/F/Garrett, IN) and Quintin Butler (Jr/F/Greenwood, SC) IPFW cut the lead to seven.

But Xavier (4-4) hit their foul shots down the stretch to hold on for the win.

Simon led the Mastodons with 19 points and nine rebounds. Campbell and sophomore guard Beau Bauer (Walton, IN) each chipped in 15 points.

Xavier also had two players with 19 point nights. Center Brian Thornton and guard Stanley Burell tied Simon for game-high honors.

Even though they shot 45-percent for the game, the loss was IPFW's fifth straight. They will travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to face Marquette on Sunday, January 2nd. Game time has been changed to 6pm.
