Mastodons Let One Slip Away

Fort Wayne, IN - IPFW had the University of Maine on the ropes, but couldn't finish them off, Thursday night at the Memorial Coliseum. The Black Bears tied the game with seven seconds left, and then topped IPFW in overtime 67-64.

IPFW battled back from a 12-point deficit in the second half to take a two point lead with just eleven seconds remaining in regulation. Sophomore guard Beau Bauer (Walton, IN) was fouled and sent to the line. He made the first, giving the Mastodons a 59-56 lead, but his second shot caroomed off the back of the rim. Maine grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball up the floor, and into the hands of junior guard Ernest Turner. Turner drilled a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Mastodons turned the ball over three times, allowing Maine to hold on for the three-point win.

Both teams featured balanced scoring, with four players on each side hitting for double-figures. Junior forward Mark Flavin had a game-high 17 to pace the Black Bears (5-4).

IPFW was led by senior center David Simon (Vernon Hills, IL) with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Bauer tossed in 15 points and had a career-high seven steals. Junior forward Quintin Butler (Greenwood, SC) and sophomore guard Quintin Carouthers (Flint, MI) had 13 and 10 points respectively.

IPFW falls to 3-9 on the year. They will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to face Xavier on Tuesday, December 28th at 7pm.
