Press Release DECEMBER
7, 2004 It Finally All Came Together Fort Wayne, IN- Some nights they defended well but couldn’t score. Some night’s they could score but didn’t defend well, or they turned it over, or were beat on the glass. But, IPFW put together one of their best games since turning Division I, on Tuesday night, beating Utah State, 64-59, at the Memorial Coliseum. After a sub-par performance against Morehead State, IPFW clicked on a phases of their game, especially from behind the arc. The Mastodons shot 50% from three-point land (9-18). Sophomore guard Beau Bauer (Walton, IN) hit a couple of threes from NBA range to stake IPFW to a nine point lead. Bauer drilled four triples in the first half. Freshman forward Pete Campbell (Muncie, IN) added a pair of huge threes in the first half, as well, to give IPFW a 33-25 advantage at half-time. In the second half, the Dons began to pound it inside to senior center David Simon (Vernon Hills, IL). Simon responded time and time again. After IPFW lost the lead for the first time since the 14-minute mark of the first half, it was Simon grabbing a loose ball and throwing down a monster two-handed dunk, putting IPFW up for good at 55-54. Utah State did not go quietly though, cutting a four-point Mastodons the lead to one, as Spencer Nelson got a layup to go and was fouled. Spencer hit the free throw to make it 60-59 IPFW. On the next possession, Campbell found himself alone in the corner and drilled his fourth triple of the game. That, coupled with a blocked shot by sophomore guard Quintin Carouthers (Flint, MI), sealed the win. IPFW was led by Simon and Campbell, each with 16 points. Simon added 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Campbell was 4-8 from behind the arc. Bauer was 4-7 from behind the arc for 14 points. One of the best efforts of the evening came from Carouthers, who held Aggies guard Jaycee Carroll to just 4 points. Carroll came into the game averaging just under 14 points per game. IPFW out-shot Utah State 47.3% to 44.9%. And for the sixth time in eight games this season, IPFW out-rebounded and opponent, beating the taller Aggies on the glass 35-27. Nate Harris and Spencer Nelson led Utah State with 20 points each. It was only the second loss for the Aggies (5-2) who had beaten BYU and Utah in their last two games. IPFW moves to 3-5 on the season and will host UT-Martin, Saturday night at 7pm, at the Memorial Coliseum ~Dons~ |
