Press Release JULY
11,
2003 Coliseum, Globetrotters & Vitale – OH MY! Fort Wayne, IN. - IPFW Athletics announced this afternoon that all of its Men’s Basketball games will be played at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum for the 2003-04 season. In addition, two Women’s Games will be played at the Coliseum, as doubleheaders with Men’s Games. “A Division I Basketball Program requires a Division I facility,” said Mark Pope, IPFW’s Director of Athletics. “Playing at the Coliseum provides IPFW fans with one of the best facilities in the Midwest, and it brings basketball to center stage for the Fort Wayne community.” Adding NCAA Division I basketball completes the array of sporting events offered at the Coliseum. “We couldn’t be happier with the steps that IPFW is taking with its Division I athletic program,” said Randy Brown, General Manager of the Memorial Coliseum. “IPFW has really done its homework and will bring a great product to the Coliseum.” Doug Noll, Head Men’s Basketball Coach at IPFW, announced the team’s schedule today. One of the highlights of the schedule includes an exhibition game against the Harlem Globetrotters on Thursday, November 13, at 7 PM. In addition, IPFW will welcome ESPN’s legendary Dick Vitale to its Homecoming Game against the University of Toledo on Friday night, November 21. “There may be schools that play the Globetrotters, or have Dick Vitale come and speak, but no school will do both in the same month – except IPFW!” said Dan O’Connell, Executive Director of the Fort Wayne Convention and Visitors Bureau. “What IPFW is doing for this community is unbelievable. IPFW has emerged as a leader in community growth and development.” Earlier this month, IPFW launched a capital campaign which will feature three new buildings on its campus, as well as the student housing facilities currently under construction. Vitale, who
called in to the press conference today, said that IPFW is taking
the right steps and doing the right things to take become a legitimate
Division I team. “Why these guys aren’t in a conference is beyond
me! Hey Commissioners, take a good look at IPFW! They’re ready
to compete in your conference right now!” Vitale is just a start of many great promotions this year. “We’re well into the planning of our promotional schedule,” said Pope. “We’re going to do some very exciting things this season.” Season Tickets went on sale today, and can be purchased for as low as $50 for a general admission seat, up to $70 for reserved seats. Season tickets include the Globetrotter game, as well as a special Dick Vitale Pre-Game reception on November 21. Tickets can be ordered by calling the IPFW Ticket Office at (260) 481-6000. “The price is right,” Brown said. “It’s a great ticket for a reasonable price, especially when you consider all of the promotions and great Division I basketball.” IPFW
