Press Release JANUARY
19, 2004 IPFW Snaps Skid Fort Wayne, IN- Maybe a little "fun & gun" was just what the doctor ordered for the IPFW men's basketball team. The Mastodons and Tri-State University Thunder staged a track meet at the Coliseum, Monday night, and at the finish line it was IPFW winning 93-81. The crowd of over two-thousand enjoyed every minute of this one, because it was non-stop action from the opening tip. Tri-State employs a "wholesale substitution" routine, that runs in a fresh five players about every two to three minutes, and they never stop pressing or shooting the three. In fact, they hit ten triples in the first half. The Mastodons were more than happy to play the up-tempo game. On a number of occasions, junior center David Simon (Vernon Hills, IN) was left alone underneath for a thundering slam. The Thunder kept it close with their sharp-shooting. At the half, the 'Dons only had a five point lead (46-41). But, in the second half, IPFW let it be known early that their would be no upset. Senior forward Keion Henderson (Gary, IN) keyed an 8-0 run to start the half, including a "windmill" slam, helping IPFW open up a 20-point lead. They would coast to the final horn, snapping a nine game losing streak. Simon lead all scorers with 28 points and 13 rebounds. Four other 'Dons hit in double figures. Henderson finished with fifteen. Freshman forward Justin Hawkins (Garrett, IN) had 13, senior forward Jim Kessenich (Pewaukee, WI) tossed in 12, and freshman guard Beau Bauer (Walton, IN) added eleven. Tri-State was led by Brandon O'Leary who finished with 22 points. The Mastodons (3-15) are now off until January 28th. They hit the road to take on Texas-Pan American. Game time is 8:30pm.
