Freshman Three Pointer Sinks 'Dons

Murfreesboro, TN - Freshman guard Bryan Smithson's three-pointer with :51 left in regulation, broke a 65-65 tie, and sent Middle Tennessee State to a come-back 72-65 win over IPFW on Tuesday night at the Murphy Center.

IPFW controlled most of the action throughout the game. The Mastodons opened up the contest on an 11-0 run, and led the Blue Raiders at the half 40-36.

Junior guard Terry Collins (Fort Wayne, IN) led IPFW with 12 first-half points.

David Simon (Jr/C/Vernon Hill, IL) had eleven at the break.

In the second half, MTSU took a brief lead at the 13-minute mark (48-46), but a three-pointer from Tyler Clevenger (So/G/Winchester, IN) put the Mastodons back in control.

The Blue Raiders (7-5) remained close and tied the game again on a jumper by senior guard Tommy Gunn at the 2:40 mark.

That set up Smithson's heroics. IPFW called time-out after the Smithson three. They got two chances at a tying basket, but the ball wouldn't go down.

Gunn made four foul shot in the final 19-seconds to seal the win.

IPFW (2-12) did not score in the final 3:37 of the game, and MTSU finished on an 11-0 run of their own.

Collins led the Mastodons in scoring with a game-high 23 points.

Simon was the only other 'Don in double figures with thirteen (held to one field goal in the second half). Simon missed his fourth consecutive double-double by one rebound.

Smithson led four Blue Raiders in double figures with fifteen.

MTSU was 26-32 from the foul line. IPFW only went to the foul line eleven times (7-11).

The Mastodons will try to snap their current six game losing skid on Friday night (1/9) at Air Force.
