IPFW Loses on Buzzer Beater

Fort Wayne, IN- The Memorial Coliseum has become the “House of Thrills” this season for the IPFW men’s basketball team. Four of the Mastodons’ five home games have been decided in the final minute. Saturday afternoon’s game against Southeast Missouri State was no exception.

The Indians (7-4) got a 15-footer from Brett Hale, with less that a second to go, stopping a furious IPFW comeback, winning 77-75.

SEMO absolutely hit nothing but the bottom of the net in the first half. They shot 64-percent from the field, including 9-13 from three-point range (69%) to take an 11 point lead at halftime (51-40).

In the second half, IPFW (2-11) figured that the Indians had to come back down to earth, and they did. Shooting a steady 50-percent from the field themselves, the Mastodons climbed back into the game on the strength of junior center David Simon (Vernon Hills, IL) inside, and the offensive spark of sophomore forward Brandon Jennings (Canal Winchester, OH).

Jennings came off the bench and immediately scored eight straight points (two triples) to cut the SEMO lead to nine.

Simon, who had a game high 22 points and 15 rebounds for his third consecutive double-double, tied the game with :19 seconds left on an offensive rebound and put-back.

That set up the Indians’ final possession. They brought the ball up the floor, hit Brett Hale at the top of the key, and his runner bounced around the rim before dropping through.

IPFW’s desperation full-court pass was knocked away, and SEMO held on for the win.

Junior Dainmon Gonner led the Indians with 18 points. Derek Winans added 16 points, and Hale had fifteen.

Terry Collins (Jr/G/Fort Wayne, IN) finished the game with 20 points, and Jennings chipped in eleven.

IPFW’ home-stand was a short one. They will take to the road for the next three, including games at Middle Tennessee State (1/6), Air Force (1/9), and Western Michigan (1/14).
