Hopkins’ “Three” Sinks Mastodons

Fort Wayne, IN- Junior guard Ryan Hopkins’ three-pointer, with less than a minute remaining, lifted the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles to a 61-58 win over IPFW, Tuesday night at the Memorial Coliseum.

Hopkins’ triple overshadowed a tremendous performance by IPFW junior center David Simon (Vernon Hills, IL) who had a double-double of 19 points and a career record 18 rebounds.

IPFW led at the half by two (30-28), and had kept high-scoring forward Leighton Bowie in check. Had it not been for the outside shooting of junior guard Bryan Crislip (3-3 from behind the arc), the lead could have been much more. Crislip had 11 at the half.

The second half was tight, featuring five ties and nine lead changes. The final lead change coming with just 50-seconds left as Hopkins nailed his three from the top of the key.

IPFW had two shots to go ahead, or tie, at the end, but couldn’t get a shot to fall.

Crislip was team-high for the Eagles (20-3) with 18 points. Hopkins added twelve, and Bowie added ten.

Senior guard Keion Henderson (Gary, IN) added 16 for the Mastodons (3-22). Senior forward Jim Kessenich (Pewaukee, WI) came off the bench to add ten.

IPFW will now be off until the 25th when they travel to Rochester, MI, to take on Oakland University at 7pm.
