Red Hot Hurricanes Shoot Down Mastodons

Coral Gables, FL - The Miami Hurricanes connected on 51-percent of their shots from the floor Tuesday night, in a 75-52 win over the IPFW Mastodons, on the Hurricanes' home floor.

Early in the first half, the Mastodons didn't have an answer for Miami senior forward Darius Rice. Rice went 4-7 from the floor for eleven first-half points.

When Rice cooled off, Robert Hite heated up. Hite, a 6'2" sophomore guard, accounted for eight of Miami's final ten points in the first-half (including two three-pointers). He led all scorers at the break with twelve.

The 'Dons stayed close early on the strength of David Simon's play inside. The junior center from Vernon Hills, Illinois, connected on 4-6 from the floor for eleven points.

After getting down by as many as twelve, the Mastodons made a brief run at Miami. Junior guard Terry Collins' layup and foul, with less than four minutes left, cut the Miami lead to eight.

But, after the Hite outburst, the Hurricanes led 40-23 at intermission.

Miami came out and opened up a 22 point lead in the second half.

IPFW was able to cut it back to fourteen before the Hurricanes put it away.

Successive layups by Guillermo Diaz increased the Miami lead back to twenty, and they cruised to the 75-52 win.

Simon, the game's high-scorer, registered his second "Big East" double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds (He also doubled up West Virginia). Simon was the only Mastodon to hit double figures. Beau Bauer (Fr/G/Walton, IN) and Collins (Fort Wayne/Snider) each added eight.

Hite led a trio of Hurricanes in double-figures with 17 points. Rice had sixteen, and sophomore guard Armando Surratt chipped in ten.

IPFW turned the ball over 17 times in the game, and shot just 36 percent from the field.

The Mastodons return home to host Southeast Missouri State at the Memorial Coliseum on Saturday (1/3) at 1pm.
