Mountaineers top Mastodons

Morgantown, WV - Lack of production from the guard positions and a swarming WVU half-court trap led to Sunday's 76-63 loss to West Virginia.

The first half was a tough one for the Mastodons' guards. IPFW got no scoring from the one or two position. All the scoring came from the big men. Jim Kessenich (Sr/F/Pewaukee, WI) was tops for IPFW with 8 points, working the 15 ft area.

Junior center David Simon (Vernon Hills, IL) was strong in the paint, with seven points, but WVU guard Drew Schifino took over at the end of the first half, scoring six of his 11 points, giving the Mountaineers a 36-23 lead at the break.

The second half was much of the same, as WVU (6-3) employed an active half-court trap, opening up a 20 point lead.

The 'Dons played the Mountaineers straight-up, in the second half, but couldn't overcome Schifino's game high 21 points.

Johannes Herber added fifteen for WVU on 4-5 shooting (3-4 from behind the arc).

Simon led the Mastodons with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Kessenich, who picked up his 4th foul early in the second half, finished with ten, and Keion Henderson (Sr/F/Gary, IN) had 11 points and five rebounds.

For the game, WVU shot 46% from the floor, while IPFW shot 40%. Rebounds were dead even at 34.

The 'Dons (2-9) now travel to Miami, Florida, to take on another Big East opponent (Miami, FL), Tuesday (12/30-7pm) before returning home to host Southeast Missouri State (1/3-1pm).

note: Drew Schifino leads the Nation in consecutive games scoring in double figures with 47.
