#17 Purdue Struggles with IPFW

West Lafayette, IN- The Purdue Boilermakers had a tough time getting rid of IPFW, in the second game of the 13th annual Boilermaker Classic on Saturday at Mackey Arena. But Mastodon foul trouble and a second half rush led to an 80-69 Purdue victory.

The first half was a tough battle, with the Mastodons showing that they were ready for their Big Ten opponents. Rick Wyand (Jr./F/Indianapolis, IN) got the 'Dons going early with a pair of three-pointers.

The Boilermakers spread the scoring around in the first half, with junior guard Brandon McKnight leading the way with seven points.

IPFW seemed to answere Purdue bucket-for-bucket, with freshman guard Beau Bauer (Walton, IN) giving the Mastodons a brief 21-19 lead with just eight minute left.

Purdue would go on a 7-0 run culminating with a Matt Keifer dunk making it 26-21 Boilermakers with 6:20 to go.

Jim Kessenich (Sr/F/Pewaukee, WI) gave the 'Dons their final lead of the first half with a lay-in and foul, making it 27-26 at the 4:46 mark.

Purdue would, however, take a 35-34 half-time lead.

Keady's kids began to open it up in the second half. Purdue quickly opened up an eight-point lead on a Chris Booker jumper at 49-41.

Then the foul trouble began for the Mastodons. Ric Wyand, David Simon, and Kyle Thrasher each picked up their fourth foul early, and that opened up the flood gates inside for the Boilers.

Booker and Keiffer went on a scoring tear that ballooned the Purdue lead to 20 points.

But, IPFW would not go away quietly. Simon (Jr/C/Vernon Hills, IL) scored six straight points and the 'Dons started to creep closer.

Any thoughts of a Mastodon comeback were dashed when IPFW turned the ball over on three straight possesions with about four minutes left.

Keiffer led all scorers with 23 points. Booker added eighteen.

For the Mastodons, Simon was high-man with 19 points, junior guard Terry Collins (Fort Wayne, IN) had 12, and Keion Henderson (Sr/F/Gary,IN) finished with ten.

Purdue improved to 8-1, and will face SMU (4-3) in the finals set for Sunday.

SMU topped Miami, OH in the opening game of the Classic 66-55.

IPFW (2-7) will face Miami, OH (3-4) at 1pm, on Sunday, in the consolation game.
